The Role
As far as placement years go, this has got to be the placement which allows the placement student to thrive the most. You are allowed to get deeply involved in projects you would think only long standing and experienced engineers would be able to do. You are treated as a proper engineer.
I worked in the Systems Engineering department and felt valued by every member of the team. You are viewed as a person with potential rather than a cheap work horse. You form professional and personal bonds with the other employees and everyone works together when someone needs help to get a job done.
My placement supervisor spent a lot of time early on in my placement teaching me new skills and helping me learn the important things. The manager of the department gives a lot of support to help get work over the line and out to the customer. Every member of the team provides support when required.
There’s a lot of work floating around, but you are given enough time to do what you need to do. There’s a wide variety of work to get on with which never leaves you bored. There are times where you have to push a bit harder to get work out on time.
I was treated as a Systems Engineer from the start. I had my own projects, meetings and presentations. The level of responsibility given allows you to thrive and develop your skills. There are times where it feels like quite a lot but it’s definitely worth it to have the development.
The skills are useful at uni, but most importantly they are useful for your work career. Uni is a bit more specialised than a career and you will not be disappointed with the experience you gain at Martin-Baker. You build up a good work effort which helps a lot at uni.
The Company
There are moments throughout the day where the office have a chance to relax and have a chat with a cup of tea. Other times people are getting on with there work. You are allowed to wear headphones which helps you to focus. You can ask anyone a question at any time though which is good.
There’s not really an internship scheme. Therefore, there are no organised sections of your placement. However, the organisation of your work is well structured and reviewed every week. This ensures you have the right amount of work on your plate at all times. You also get 6 month reviews where you can discuss your development.
I have received a bursary to go back to uni which is fantastic. The development is tailored to the individual as well. There wasn’t much training for a placement student but there is when you go back full time. They can also offer to help pay for your masters, but that’s on their terms and had to be done near the company over 3 years whilst you work.

I have received a bursary which which comes with the offer of a job as long a suitable job is open at the time I finish my degree. People are brought into the company in graduate roles often which allows people to move up the ladder and earn better salaries. I think this is a good structure.
The Culture
People organise department outings every other month, and there’s always a good Christmas quiz! There are events, visits to the pub, dinners and many more. This allows the department to bond and work better together as a team. I thoroughly enjoyed my outings with them, however my boss could drink me under the table!
