The Role
The placement’s work and structure were not very organised. I spent the first 5 months of the placement reading and learning about the plant systems and how things work. Thought the work was only enjoyable to some extent and repetitive, I had the chance to work with some friendly and experienced engineers.
The people I work with were very friendly and helpful. You could always get a good chat from anyone about their weekend and hobbies. Even people from other departments were always willing to help when needed. I would even meet up with some colleagues on the weekend to have a day out which was very enjoyable.
the support and guidance given was reasonable compared to my daily work routine. I work mostly on my own after being taught how to carry out the routine work or using online system and some specific software. Due to the absence of a full team and required resources, my work was progressing slowly.
in the first months, I was barely busy since there was no proper layout of the work i was going to do during my time. I was doing some odd jobs here and there. After that I was given a fair bit of work even though the work done was not significant.
During busy times, I had quite a fair bit of responsibility especially the times when my supervisor was on annual leave. I had to pick up part of his work and liaise with operators, engineers, maintenance team and higher management to update them on different plant items' health and operation after investigating their performance.
I would say that this placement has made me more confident and given me the skills to work part of a team. It has also helped me to be more independent and interact with different people while being put in difficult situations. Skills wise relating to my degree, the placement was average.
The Company
The office of about 25 people was fairly quiet. Everyone was mostly focused on their work. the Team i was working in was quite fun and you could always get a good chat, crack some jokes, talk about your weekend. Even though people were busy they would always find time to give a helping hand. loads of cake as well
The work was not structured and very repetitive. there was no training plan or work schedule. Most of the work were computer based which limits you to developing new skills. Barely any practical experience were achieved. However some plant walk downs allowed me to learn new things about the working of the plant items.
During the placement, very little training was given. It was more a learning on the job thing and peer-to-peer coaching. Whenever i was stuck with something all i needed was to ask around and people would be happy to help. The company also organised a 2-day event in cannington court where all the IPs would meet.
I was offered the sponsorship from Edf Energy to go back to university and complete my final year. Future prospect with the company seems promising with all new recruits being sent to the new built station at Hinkley point C. I would definitely consider the graduate scheme with Edf energy after i finish my final year of university.
The Culture
The company organised a 2 day event in cannington court near Hinkley point C. This 2 day event allowed us to learn more about the company and our future into the graduate scheme. we also had the chance to visit th building site for hinkley point c. Also all expenses were paid for .
I lived outside the city of edinburgh. cost of living was fairly decent. the city centre was 20 min away by train though the trains were hourly . Iiving in edinburgh would suggest a 40 min commute to work which i did not fancy doing. The town i stayed in was a 7 min drive
no such thing as a nighlife. few pubs were the most you could get along with a 24/7 McDonalds.
I have the chance to play football every friday evening with some work people
