About You
I really enjoyed it it was a great way to test out the internship programme before fully committing to one. I enjoyed the variety of other girls that were there, and learning about how they came to also do the programme. I was happy to have decided to be in the Tax department as it was only myself on the programme in that department and so i got a wider variety of jobs.
I felt like the employees made a substantial effort to incorporate me into the workings of the department. I went to their routinely coffee breaks and socialised with peers which made me feel at ease. I too got the chance to chat to many people in the department about their careers.
I received sufficient support in relation to the insight programme i was doing . i was only there for three days so if anymore support had been provided I feel that would have been excessive. My mentors all made it clear to me that if there were any questions/ issues to speak to them- they were very approachable.
As I was working in the tax department it really helped secure the information I had learnt in my previous tax module. It put real world examples to my textbook knowledge which has no doubt helped. I also learnt a little how firms were dealing with Brexit which has been really useful as I have many assignments this year on the impact of Brexit on various things.
The Company
Some days were better than others. On the first day there was a very clear structure of what we were doing, however on other days I felt like sometimes my mentors hadn't really set aside work appropriate for me and were just hoping that something relevant would appear in the day.
The initial day was probably the most enjoyable out of the days but obviously if serious matters were being looked at, for instance important conference calls were being held, there is only a certain level of 'fun' that can be maintained. Overall, everyone around the office was pretty upbeat and welcoming.
I mean i didn't complete any training whatsoever when i was won my insight programme. I was made aware of the online functions where employees could do training modules however I never really had the opportunity to complete one. Some of the other girls did i think, i just was preoccupied with other tasks i think.
Yeah i got to speak to some graduates who gave me a good idea what it is working for a firm such as PwC. One of my mentors was a mum who had gone part time so it was good to speak to her about how the company and her have worked together to come up with a working pattern for her.
I got the impression that although everyone was clearly extremely hard working, they knew when to relax and enjoy themselves as well which was nice. But yes, it is clear that to get to senior positions a large amount of hard work, effort and potential sacrifice in other areas is required
I worked with several people in tax who all had a variety of roles. It was a good way to see what would suit me best. Mergers and acquisitions does interest me now, as well as transfer pricing and so it is good because i can look out for these areas in work now.
Everything Else
I was paid however they made the instant assumption that i was a basic rate tax payer and so a large chunk was taken off. i am in fact a student and so i am definitely under the threshold and i don't receive a student loan or anything else and so was pretty annoyed. i phoned up and asked for a rebate. I think they should ask you beforehand what tax payer you are before assuming.
This is where i think PwC came up top. I spoke to honestly loads of people at all levels of the hierarchy, in all different departments about their career and how they came to be where they are. I found this so useful and it really gave me an indication of the opportunities available.
I got the opportunity to speak to the other girls who were doing the programme in consulting at the start and end but not really too much in between. they were all lovely. There wasn't really any social events going on around the office, but i think that is just your luck if they are on at the time.
No not really to be honest. nobody talked about any groups or networks they were involved in.
Hundred percent it fast tracks you into the internship between 3rd and 4th year. Everyone is stressing applying for things when you are in third year and you can relax because it is all sorted. it is such a weight lifted off of your shoulders and you know you have it secured.
