Software Engineer Review

I enjoyed it a lot, looked forward to going to work because was working on things I enjoyed. And had the freedom to takes things in directions i wanted to. This made my work feel important and that I was really adding value. Everyone in my team made it a fun place to work also.

I felt extremely valued. My colleagues treated me with respect form day one. They took onboard my opinions and always asked for them. Also they took time out of their day to offer help and when i specifically asked for things they would go out of their way for me.

My manager was extremely helpful with bi-weekly 1 on 1s which made it really easy to raise issues and talk about my experience. And outside this structured time it was easy to ask for a few minutes to talk. If the issue was directly work related or something that would just affect your day to day it all mattered.

I was the correct level of busy. I was given larger tasks which i could break down and there was no strict deadlines which allowed me to work hard without feeling overwhelmed. This was a really good experience for me. And if i was out of work there was always more work to do or i could take time to do training and learn new skills.

Was given a large amount of responsibility from putting in lots of input to other products and being asked for high level advice to being the leader on a whole product which allowed me to prioritise and take things as i saw fit. This also meant i was given the responsibility of presenting to directors which is a very good skill.

The skills i developed from being in an industrial situation helped a lot with my uni work because you learn a lot of new technology and how to manage workflow. Also they had good internal resources for learning all of the skills you need on the job and allowed time for you to take during work to make sure you had the skills.

A good mix of hard working intellient people and a relaxed atomosphere which allows you to feel comfortable talking to the people you need to and not stress about things. There was lots of sports groups etc and things to get involved with. And lots of cultural events and innovation.

The HR/recuitment team did an absolutely amazing job organising the work placement. Everything was seamless and we always had contact with them if we needed help. It really felt like we were a priority and not an inconvinent addition to the office. They also made sure everyones individual managers were well informed.

Company did lots of sessions to teach us and there was lots of online training. They also pay for a subscription to external learning sight which allows you to learn everything you need to do for your job. There is also lots of speaker sessions which you can learn lots form.

The potential future employment prospects are very good. They give you good amount of training to start with and from day 1 you are treated as a full employee instead of being treated like a uni graduate who does not know what they are doing. There are lots of opportunities as well as it is a large company.

During the placement there was a huge amount of social events set up by the teams specifically in the first few weeks and this let us get to know everyone and start organising these events ourselves. The social life was a great experience which felt very like university and close knit.

Glasgow is relatively cheap, room roughly £400 a month, pints about £3. It is a very good balance between well paid and quite cheap. There is a lot of student deals at resturants and bars which allow you to use your still student position as an industrial placement to take advantage.

An incredible amount of bars and clubs in Glasgow. The garage is by far the best. But you have a huge selection from all different times of music and vibes. Lots of cheap nights you can choose from aswell. Always busy, lots of late night food places open if you need a snack.

Huge amount of clubs at work if your into sports or chess or anything you can imagine. You can also organise them yourselves. As there is a big amount of placements there is lots of opportunities to do activities with them too. It is very easy as everyone is super friendly.
