The Role
The work on this placement is meaningful, engaging and has helped me progress my knowledge, improving my research skills. It is also great to see my work being used by full time colleagues at BASF while and after I have left. The job involves lots of long term project work. If you have a keen interest in Project management and would like responsibility on the job then this role is ideal.
Tony creates a really good team working environment at BASF. The role bases you in a team of around four, called the Project team. Within this team they are interns and graduates. Having people around the same age helped me personally make friends. In terms of everyone else from around the Business, people are great and always willing to help you, whilst valuing your work. If you ever feel like you would like to spend some time in a different area e.g. Sales, I'm sure Tony and members of the sales team would be happy to help.
Tony had monthly meeting with all of the interns in order to have a long catch up with how our life was going personally and at work. For me, I was living on my own and it was a challenge. To have management that would be there to talk to was key my overall happiness whilst at BASF. Outside of this, I always felt able to ask for assistance and received guidance in return.
In this role, it is especially busy at the start of the month, this is due to monthly reporting responsibilities. Then with the project work if you are coming towards the end of the work you will be busy. However they is always time to complete the work and the balance of work for me was ideal. Personally, it is good to be busy as this is how you get the maximum skills out of your placement.
Our work was being use to improve sales. The work we did was useful to other colleagues and with that comes responsibility. Tony and Darren puts trust in you and this also means that you are working on important tasks. I felt motivated to do my work and this is an indicator of responsibility.
I have already taken the skills learnt on my placement back into my study. I learnt a lot more Microsoft Excel and I am now a lot more confident when presenting in front of large groups. You present projects to members of the Business, which is an essential career skill to have.
The Company
It was great. People at the Business are very funny and easy to get along with. The company have an open door office policy and in some cases, senior management sit with other employees. This sounds scary but it makes them very approachable and you can form not only great friendships but good contacts of experts in the Chemical industry.
The placement year has been running for a long time now. Tony is very good at taking on feedback and the structure of the placement is seamless. You are eased into the role and are taught by the previous year of interns. This is good also to learn from the experiences they have had over the last 12 months.
They are a great company to work for. The facilities at the office are great, e.g the office has a free to use gym . One that looks after employees really well. They are all well valued and get lots of exciting opportunities as well as financial benefits. e.g the shares scheme. It is definitely a place I could see myself working at post graduation.
The Culture
Yes, they is a good group of young people at the company. They is also a sports social where I played Badminton and football. We also organised lots of social nights out and also went to watch Manchester City with the company. They is also intern meeting held every month, so they is a lot of chemistry between the younger colleagues.
The area was great. However the cost was quite expensive, however this is something that I personally choose because I was not from the area and I wanted to make sure I was happy. I lived in Alderley Edge which is known for being expensive, however I would recommend you look at living in places such as Cheadle Hulme and Handforth.
Near the office you have Alderley Edge and Wilmslow which are quite good for bars and pubs. Around 20 minutes away you have Manchester City centre which obviously has an excellent nightlife for all. They are lots of nice pubs around too if ever a colleague is leaving you will often visit them for a team lunch.
Yes, we was offered a change to go to sporting events, for example I went to a customer event where we watched England V India in a cricket match. As well as this we had lots of award dinners which was a good opportunity to network and this also improved to the social aspect of the job.
