Accounting intern Review

I really enjoyed my placement because I was given a lot to do and treated like I was part of the team from the get go. I have been given a lot of trust in the tasks I undertake and I have had the opportunity to do some other non-work related projects, which I really enjoy.

As my team is a small one, everyone is very close and you can speak to anyone without worrying. Everyone goe's to the gym together and since being here I've had the opportunity to start planning social events for the office, for example I organised bowling for after work and nearly everyone attended.

I was told the door is always open if I have any questions or problems and I feel like if I don't understand something I'm comfortable enough to book in a meeting with someone who could explain it to me. Due to illness, I didn't have a specific mentor for the start but I had weekly meetings with managers to track my progress.

I think for the most part, the work has been managable. However everyday is a new day and some days are a lot busier than others. There were days where I have ended up staying later to get all my work done but also days where I have had the time to work on improving processes and doing other projects.

I was given a lot of responsibility and trust throughout my placement so far. I was undertaking really intergral roles in the business however most thing's in my department are split up and need approval from another person as a safety check and precaution. We all do important roles that all interlock with each other.

I think a lot of what I have learnt so far will be really beneficial when applying to jobs in the future because a lot of the tasks I do are tasks that happen in nearly every business. I have not done a lot that relates to my degree, but some personal skills such as timings and forward planning will be vital.

There is always something going on in my office, from social events, bake off and rugby sweepstakes to birthdays and seasonal meals out and parties. Everyone is really friendly and it is a very open atmosphere in the office. It's really somewhere you look forward to coming to, which is nice.

I think there could have been a little bit more communication before the start of the internship but since starting we have been getting weekly updates and emails about our internships and everyone is in the loop with what's going on. There are also monthly 'intern-circle' meetings where people can get their voices heard.

The company hasn't really invested a lot in terms of general intern training, but the people in my office have invested a lot of time to teach me thing's I'm interested in. Most of the time all you have to do is ask and people will give you their time.

I haven't really heard anything about graduate schemes but I do think there are some. I think they could really explain these prospects a lot better than how they have been but maybe they leave this until later into the internship.

Every week there are intern socials, run by other interns, where people can go and get to know other interns. These are usually based in a local pub in town and we get emails about them at the start of every week to let us know where and what time.

There are so many opportunities to socialise in Oxford. There are loads of pubs, clubs, cafes, community events and everything else you can think of. My rent is quite reasonally priced for the area and I definetly get paid enough to cover it and have money to live off of.

There is something going on every night if you want to go out every night. Having two universities in the same city allows for there to be enough students and young people to have student events on all the time. There us never a dull evening in Oxford.

Since starting I have filled most of my days after work with other activities, such as volunteering with a local scout group and with the local powerlifting club. There are plenty of things to do if you want to get involved with the community and with Oxford not being massive, it only takes 30 minutes to cycle to most places.
