The Role
It was the best thing I have ever done, the amount I learnt during my placement over shadows the amount I learnt at University. Particularly the organisation, who invest a lot of time in the Early In Careers, you really have the platform to succeed.
The Culture around Microsoft is what made the year so special. My colleagues are now considered close friends, they really have the best intentions for you as everyone is encourage to 'come as you are, do what you love'.
Informally, my manager and I would have weekly meetings to discuss what i am currently doing and what I want to achieve. Formally, we have a quarterly review to look at our performance and areas for improvement. This sounds harsh but the feedback is constructive and incredibly valuable.
It is what you make of it, you have your core remit and the workload is not too intense as you are there to learn as much as possible. I took the opportunity to experiment and put myself outside of my comfort zone (something the culture encourages you to do).
You are given the same responsibility a full-time employee is given. This is due to their growth mindset culture, where you are there to develop as much as you can.
The most important learning is the mindset I will enter my final year. I will look at my modules tactically, with a thorough plan which involves gaining feedback and as many as perspective as possible. My time at my placement showed me the value of working the full 9-5 day.
The Company
Friendly, everyone was working hard but also enjoying their time.
Very organised, you are assigned a manager and a 101 team which involved a responsibility outside of your core remit.
You have the ability to take on as many exams as you like to build your technical accreditation. You are also given learning modules every quarter to ensure you have a good knowledge to perform your job.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Very appealing, I hope to come back.
The Culture
Yes, there was 64 placement students so there was a community which was really helpful to ensure we all settled in well. If you felt nervous to ask certain questions, you could always rely on asking other interns who are in a similar position.
Relatively expensive as reading can be quite expensive. However, there is a University there so it is not outside of what you have already experienced being a student.
It was enough to enjoy a years worth.
Yes, there is a local University which always has activities to get involved in.
