The Role
It was incredibly varied and was very rewarding. Some departments are willing to help me learn as much as possible and make sure that I was able to get as much out of my placement to make it more worthwhile. In the start there will be a large amount of paperwork/admin to get you started and familiar with the processes they have as a company.
This varied across the power station but with the team I worked in I was valued by them as I was able to work to strict deadlines and prove that I am able to handle the workload or to be adjusted to suit me. Most people on the Power station are friendly.
It's expected that I would have taken initiatives and sought out any solutions to challenges myself but my supervisor was available to give some pointers in the right direction if I needed help. Initially I received a lot of support to ensure I received the adequate training I needed ignored to complete tasks assigned to me
This varied quite a bit on the placement as in the initial months I was not very busy, but had quite a few training courses to complete before embarking on tasks. There is a clear structure to the day as you are encouraged to use your calender to keep track of events/meetings and task deadlines
Initially the amount of responsibility was quite low and you may be given a number of admin tasks to start with. As its the nuclear sector the amount of responsibility will remain lower as experience and extensive training is needed before completing tasks. As a result, I was given significantly more responsibility towards the end of my placement with EDF and made direct impact on the power station.
I didn't realise them at the time during my placement, but when returning to University I realised how much I have developed as a person, more confident during presentations and having a more professional approach to my work, report writing, feedback panels to the department. My time management skills has improved significantly and i'm better at handling more busy schedules
The Company
Quite relaxed and informal. Everyone was willing to help or offer information to assist newcomers in the office.
Not very structured but it was up to me to decide how much I wanted out of it so I was able to negotiate what I wanted to do within the company
They invested quite a lot of time and resources in training as it's required for this sector in-order to complete simple tasks.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Good benefits available and the chance to learn from more experienced employees.
The Culture
The power station was quite isolated and other placement students lived quite a distance from each other/will travel back home at weekends so chances of socialising at weekends or the evenings was quite low.
The local area was quite expensive to live in but more affordable when living an hour away in the nearest large town. There are a few pubs around frequented by contractors and locals alike in the local area but no social scene other than that.
Non-exsistent as it was the middle of nowhere
Yes,many STEM activities with nearby schools, charity fundraisers and national events
