About You
The staff in the office were very friendly and helpful, made sure you settled in well and most of the junior staff had lunch together every day which was nice. The work taught you a lot and you learnt a lot about the audit industry but at times due to your lack of training some of the tasks available were a little tedious
all the staff were helpful and made you feel welcome. you were trusted with a high spec laptop and treated like a full time member of staff, you had a lot of responsibility from the start. Deloitte made an effort to help integrate you as well as give you a good introduction that helped you understand everything that was going on there were social activities that you were invited to take part in as well, from office meals to sporting activities as well as post-work drinks on a Friday
at first you do feel like you've been dropped in the deep end, especially if you have had no auditing experience. but there is a range of resources available online to help you out, the managers all made sure that you knew what you were doing and were always approachable if you wanted to ask a question, as were all of the other members of staff I encountered. they had a buddy system where a senior would mentor you and be available to support you as well as help you with the end of internship interview.
I gained an understanding of the audit and general business world which would be very useful for after my degree. the insight wouldn't help me with my degree too much as I don't study accounting and finance
The Company
There was a lot of support available for you throughout the process. they made sure you always had something to do and had structured events at the start to introduce you to the firm. there was only a couple of times when I was left with little or nothing to do
The staff were very friendly and helpful and they created a nice atmosphere where everyone was approachable and would help you out or talk to you
they gave you a training morning at the start, where you went through the basics of auditing as well as having a high end laptop with access to all the deloitte e-resources - of which there are a lot
you were shadowing junior members of staff at time, as well as working alongside them for the whole of the insight so I gained a pretty good idea of what it would be like on a day to day basis to work for the company. the whole team talked to you about working there and the ups and downs which was useful
you got to see what it was like on a daily basis, and the staff told you about life working for Deloitte. I don't think culture at Deloitte is too dissimilar from the other big accountancy firms, so it was also useful to learn about accounting culture in general; there is a big difference between the culture in industry and at the audit firms
It gave me a first hand insight into what auditing would consist of and the staff told me everything that would be useful when deciding whether to pursue the career; from salaries to opportunities in the firm as well as in the accounting industry in general, there was nothing I didn't know that I thought would be useful to make decisions on my career
Everything Else
the expenses system was fair and easy to use and the pay was very good compared to a standard summer job or other internships. they explained the expenses system in advance, and communicated the pay you should expect quite soon after being offered the placement. they covered any expenses to places which weren't the office that you were based at
you were given the impression from the start that everyone was approachable and everyone was friendly. on the first day all the interns were in London for an introduction day and there was plenty of time then to talk to one another and network then. they also set up a couple of meeting/interviews with senior staff at the end where you delivered a presentation and you could reflect on your time at the firm
there was lots of social events within my office, more than one a week and it ranged from friday drinks to office meals/ lunches or sports
the office was quite small, but still there was a lot of out of office activities that were coordinated and sometimes partly funded by the company. a lots of them were sports related e.g. there was a once a year sports day, but there were quite a lot of regular office events that everyone took part in
it was a very good experience and I learnt a lot from it
