The Role
Matalan really gave me an insight into the buying role and put my degree into context. The full placement experience was exteremly enjoyable and Matalan is such a nice enviroment to work in.
When on placement at matalan you are a full member of the team taking on a role of a full time member of staff so colleagues really value you and your role.
Everyone at Matalan are happy to help and want you to develop and grow. Placement is a great time to find out where that industry or job role is what you actually want to go into so it is a perfect time to get as much support as you can.
Buying is a very busy department at Matalan but with the support of your management you learn to manage your time.
You are given as much responsibility as you are capable of. The more you put into your placement the more you get out of it.
You learn so much on placement that will really help with your final year of uni. It was great to see your studies put into practise and the experience you get is better then you realise at the time. It is a great way to see what is expected of you in a head office enviroment and how working with all members of the company really help with your development. There is a full training scheme at matalan which gives you the day to day basics but with the support from your management you learn so much more.
The Company
Matalan is a lovely enviroment to work in - everyone is friendly and wants the best for each other.
It is very well organised but you have to remember you are in a busy head office enviroment so you need to use your initiative and communicate when you feel you need extra support or for things to be set up.
On buying you are able to attend lots of meetings within and outside of the business which shows the company wants you full involved and investing time and money into you seeing the full buying process. They really want you to take as much from your placement as possible so you can get involved with as much as possible.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
I came back to Matalan after graduating which shows they really value your placement year with them.
The Culture
This depends on your team and what department you are part of.
The Matalan office isn't close to any places to socialise within the week
The Matalan office isn't close to any places to socialise and you have to drive to anywhere close. Liverpool isn't that far away and easy to commute from.
