The Role
I really enjoyed my experience during the eight week internship at Monitor Deloitte in strategy. We were provided with the opportunity to work on important and impactful projects with colleagues of a range of expertise and experience in the industry. The internship was organized well and gave the interns the opportunity to gain a real insight into life at Deloitte.
I felt genuinely lucky to have been placed in the team I spent the eight weeks with as they were always attentive and made me feel at ease to ask questions but also have the confidence in my own work as well. They provided me with the opportunity to experience and get involved with different stages of different projects to gain a wider insight into life at Deloitte and made me feel appreciated for the work I did.
The internship organisers did a great job at assigning analysts to each intern so they always had a point of call for any general queries and problems. Colleagues in my team were just as helpful if not more. I had weekly meetings with one member of my team who seemed genuinely interested and concerned for my development over the 8 weeks.
How busy I was on a daily basis varied depending on the project I was working on at the time. However, I believe this is typical of the industry, some days are busier than others. Quieter days gave you an opportunity to reflect on the work you’ve done and where to improve on next time, whereas busier longer days put you under time pressure and taught us how to work in a team well and to a deadline.
I personally think I was given the perfect amount of responsibility given that it was an internship. I felt I had enough responsibility to feel as though I was impacting the project in a positive way but also had the opportunity to learn from others guidance and advice on the different projects.
I have learnt and wide variety of skills I was not expecting to gain from this experience. These ranged from basic PowerPoint skills to soft skills such as reading a room and adapting yourself to speak to different colleagues and clients. I have gone on to use skills such as when presenting or writing reports in my final year of university.
The Company
The work life balance is one thing I really noticed whilst working at Deloitte. Ofcourse there are times when you work long hours but there are also times when you spend time out of work with colleagues relaxing and having a good time. The company really seems to care for its employees welfare.
It was incredibly well organized from the induction day to ensuring every intern had a project to work on and a buddy to look to for help and support in general. I was especially impressed at how much effort was put in to ensuring the interns socialize with other members of the firm.
The company is very good at ensuring you are trained for the role you are taking on. There is also a lot training regarding welfare and discrimination in the office. I was really surprised at how much time and effort they put into training us before and during the internship, from the induction days to the lunch and learns.
Company Parties/Events
After the internship I was offered a place on their graduate scheme which I have confirmed. I enjoyed working for the firm so much that there was no where else I would like to work after graduating university. The company values its employees making future employment particularly appealing to me.
The Culture
The social scene was a very surprising part of the internship. So much effort was put into making sure that the interns socialized with fellow colleagues to gain a better insight to life at Deloitte. There was at least one social each week which interns are encouraged to attend, no matter what area they are working in.
I was lucky enough to be able to live at home during my internship so, with regards to socializing, thanks to the generosity of the firm, the only costs I faced were travel to and from the events. The company really encourages you to attend the socials so having bar tabs, etc encourages this.
My internship was based in London so there were so many options, both organized by the company and other options as well.
Deloitte has a great scheme where it works on researching how they can improve life for the world as whole. I attended a workshop where colleagues of a range of levels had discussions about a variety of ideas which looked into problems within the world today. It really showed how much the company cares.
