The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed this placement year. I have been able to work at my own pace, and if I am struggling to understand certani aspects I can take as much time as I need. At the same time, I am constantly being challenged to think about new parts of digital marketing and to think outside the box. Everybody has been extremely friendly.
I always feel valued in my placement. Even small wins are celebrated within the team, and any big achievements are called out in our monthly team meetings and given a special prize! Everybody has always been extremely appreciative if I have offered any extra help on busy work days, and I always feel like a full member of the team and not just a 'placement student'.
At the start of the placement I had meetings with my new line manager to go over what I wanted to get out of the year, any topics I was most interested in and then anything I was unsure or skeptical of. My manager and all emmebrs of the team always ask I if need any help with anything and give so much time everyday to go through things with me on a 1-1 basis. On top of this I have a meeting bi-weekly with my line manager where she asks if I need any more support from the team.
Very busy, but I never feel under pressure. I have taken up some daily responsibilities and I am always given tasks to complete however they always reassure me there is no 'deadline' and to complete them at my own pace. They have also given me some projects to complete over the course of the year which is just for my personal self-learning, and I will continue with them whenever I have quiet moments in the week. This means I am never bored and always have something to do.
As much as I wanted, I like having tasks to complete myself so I have slowly taken over responsibility to complete certain tasks on a weekly basis which I then report to the wider team on. I have not been weighed down with lots of repetite daily tasks though as they want to me to remain as free as possible to watch and learn from them in new projects. It also means I have been free to attend wider HO meetings and see how other departments work.
This placement has given me a whole wealth of skills and knowledge and industry understanding that I would never have learnt at uni. I have gained experience working on different channels in the digital marketing team, so that I can confidently leave university knowing I have a very competitive breadth of knowledge. In terms of helping my degree, I have naturally become more disciplined in my work and better at producing work quickly.
The Company
The atmosphere was great - always music playing, balloons for every anniversary, cake for every real birthday. Always chatty and energetic.
Extremely organised I had a full year plan by week of what I would be learning and who with. I also had free weeks planned it so I could go back and continue learning about something if I wanted more time on it. I always had meetings to discuss if I was happy and If I was enjoying it.
I had masterclasses with the other students regarding personal development - which were so helpful. This covered well being, midfullness, career goals, etc. I also passed a Google exam which was great as I can put this on my CV - the team pushed for me to do this as they knew how great it was to have this. I have constantly been offered extra support and to go to industry events in London which have been amazing.

I would love to come back in the future and work for Matalan, it is definitely a company that cares about your career development and wants to help you learn and develop.
The Culture
There was a good social scene we went out for drinks and I have become good freinds with them. We had the chance to go to Ghetto Golf and had regular coffee catch ups.
Normal city prices - I stayed at home so not relevant.
Amazing! Liveprool city center isn't too far away and we could leave our cars in the secure work car pack then go out for the evening. There was loads of restaurants and bars and we have lots of team nights out. We also have pay day lunches at one of the nice pubs in the area.
There was something always planned! I have been to the biggest industry conference in London for two days which was brilliant for networking and listening to loads of interesting talks - all paid for by the team. I have also had the opportunity to get involved in lots of charity fundraising.
