The Role
Possibly one of the best years of my life. I learnt an enormous amount, felt incredibly valued and respected by everyone and truly enjoyed being part of an incredible company
The level of training invested in placements, as well as in my experience, general attitudes from colleagues is exactly the same as those on the grad scheme.
Had weekly one on one sessions with my manager, and monthly with my buying manager. But there was always the opportunity for me to pull anyone aside if I ever felt I needed support. Everyone was happy to help
There were always jobs that could be done, and at the start of the year, as I was still getting into the swing of the role, I was definitely always busy. Towards the end of the stint in merchandising I felt as if I could have taken on more. The buying side of the placement was a different kind of busy but still generally busy - and certainly if you put yourself out there and made yourself busy
Responsible for entire department - treated equally to those on the graduate scheme
My greatest development has been my personal confidence, which still shocks me as to the level of growth. Before the placement I was never one to speak in presentations or contribute in classes, now I find myself doing so on a daily basis. The product and substrate knowledge gained was also incredible
The Company
Office was fun to be in all the time, everyone employed is relaxed and light hearted. As a result people are easy to approach and I felt very comfortable within a short period of time
The merchandising side of the placement was incredibly well organised, with a rigorous training programme and great structure. The buying side was less formally organised, but down to you to control your own movements. There was always a support team available should you need.
The level of personal development that came from my year was incredible. I was supported by great people at every step of the placement. Placements undergo the same 3 month training period as the graduate candidates, which is both great for training and development purposes as well as meeting new people
Got offered a job to return back after completing degree in my last week
The Culture
The company seems to be generally very good at only hiring nice friendly people, making it a great place to work
I lived and commuted from home so cannot comment as this was convenient for me. Prices of socialising in Watford are what you would expect for being just outside of London
Watford itself wasn’t great. Unless you like generic, chain nightlife. But you’re 15 minutes from London so can’t complain
Big community within the office - people often did things together, even if just heading to the pub
