About You
I really enjoyed the insight day and gained a better understanding of BDO and what services they provide. I particularly enjoyed getting to meet and interact with other likeminded students from not only an accounting background, but also from a range of different degree courses. The staff members were welcoming and friendly, and made me feel comfortable and at ease.
I felt very valued during the insight day and was treated as if I were already employed there. As I had applied for the graduate scheme, staff members told me that I had done week to get that far, which made me feel valued by the company. I was also given BDO pens and a notebook, which made me feel a part of BDO already.
The staff members were very friendly and welcoming from the moment I arrived. They provided a lot of detailed information and were willing to answer questions throughout the day. They also made themselves available at the end of the day to answer any other individual questions. We were also given a leaflet with some information on, with links to their social media channels.
I built upon my communication skills, as we were working in teams for certain tasks, and had to communicate back our thought and ideas to the rest of the group. This also helped to increase my confidence, as I was given the opportunity to speak in front of a large group of people.
The Company
The insight day was very well organised and there were no delays or issues. The order of the day was in a chronological order, starting first with an introduction to BDO. The event started on time and ended at the correct time. A variety of speakers came in to do talks, which was well organised.
As there were a lot of people my age there, the atmosphere was lively and everyone was really friendly. I spoke to a lot of different people and felt comfortable engaging with others. Everyone there seemed genuinely interested in BDO, and so it was nice to have something in common with them.
As it was only an insight day, no personal actual training was given. However, BDO spoke about the support that would be in place if I were to join the graduate scheme, as well as the qualifications on offer. I got the impression that BDO invest a lot of time into their new joiners in order to retain them and reward employees.
The staff members were very clear about what type of work the different job roles involved. They also emphasised the BDO values, and how a role at BDO would incorporate these. Not only did they speak about the job role, they also informed us of the qualifications on offer, which we would also be studying towards.
As well as informing us about the job roles that BDO offer, the staff members also spoke about life outside of BDO and the events that they organise and the sports teams they offer. It gave the impression of a friendly working environment where staff get on so well that they also spend their free time together.
As I really want a career in accounting, this insight day provided me with a lot of detailed information about BDO and helped me to distinguish the company amongst other accounting firms. I got to see the different career paths on offer, such as audit and tax, and I also gained a better understanding of what qualification would best suit my needs.
Everything Else
I was not paid or reimbursed for attending this insight day, however I chose to attend this event myself so I would not have expected to be paid or reimbursed anyway. As BDO have many locations across the UK, I was easily able to travel to my nearest office at a low cost to myself anyway.
There were many opportunities to network with the other students who also attended the event with me. Additionally, I got to meet other employees at the firm and was able to hear about their experience and was given the opportunity to ask any questions that I had. I was also given an email address in case I had further questions.
The networking and social event opportunities were very good and I was given regular breaks during the day where I was able to speak to others and learn more about theme and their experience. The room was also arranged in such a way that I was easily able to speak to those around me.
Yes, I was told about some sports teams that the company has, where all employees are eligible to participate. I was also told about other events that the company organises, so if some employees do not like sports, there is something for everyone, which will suit each person’s needs.
Yes, I would highly recommend this experience to anyone considering a career in accounting and who is unsure about which path they want to choose. I would also recommend it for anyone who doesn’t know what they want to do, but wants to find out more about this type of profession. The also day helped me to see what BDO can offer me.
