The Role
It is still fairy early in my placement but I am really enjoying my placement year. I was given work straight away and made to feel like part of the team instantly. The atmosphere is also very friendly and everyone has been willing to help and explain things to me since I began.
My manager made me feel welcome from the start, as did all my colleagues in the same team and also the office as a whole. I felt valued also because I was given important tasks to work on, tasks that I was responsible for completing to be given to clients.
My manager had been absolutely amazing. A genuinely lovely person, he regularly goes out of his way to explain new concepts and methods to me thoroughly. He also takes time to ask what I want to do to ensure that I’m enjoying what I’m doing and making the most out of my experience.
Although work load varies, when I let me manager know that I am low on work he tries to give me more tasks. I am usually quite busy for at least half of the day. However there are periods after finishing my tasks where there might not be anything to do for a short while.
I was lucky enough to be given quite a lot of responsibility from the start. Being given tasks to complete final reports and also communicating with our on site engineers to gather more information. Knowing that the report I wrote would be proof read by my manager and then sent to the client was very rewarding.
At the moment the team I am working with works on very different concepts to those traditionally taught at university. However I have received training in CAD which was a skill that I wanted to strengthen and will be able to use that for my project when I return to university. Also I have developed a lot of interpersonal skills which are very transferable.
The Company
Everyone is very friendly and the working environment is very fun despite the work load. Everyone often organizes to go to lunch together and for short breaks. Also everyone is very approachable making it easy to ask for help when needed, which takes some pressure away when you’re struggling with work.
Very well set up, the process of completing paperwork etc before I started was done through the work system, which made it very easy as everything was available in one place. Providing me with a line manager was also very useful as it meant I had someone to direct my queries to which also helped me organize myself.
It is still very early however it is looking positive. My manager is very eager to always find out what training I want or what i opportunities I’d be interested in so that he can keep an eye out and let me know when the chance comes. So I am feeling positive.

Working from home
Very appealing. I have spoken to several graduates and senior engineers about the opportunities they’ve been given and the development they’ve had within the organization, and it is all very positive and promising.
The Culture
Regular lunch events as well as plans for a team Christmas party. On Fridays we try and plan to go out outside of work, giving everyone a chance to really know each other. And this make me the working environment much more enjoyable and fun which in turn leads to better outcomes.
The main problem was the travel expenses which made everything very expensive.
I am yet to experience the night life there
We have team events planned. As well as charity week which gives the graduates the opportunity to create fun activities to raise money for charity. Also there are always notices for sports activities and events happening nearby, encouraging everyone to get involved. Again things like the work Christmas party are also great opportunities for outside work activities.
