    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I have enjoyed this insight day because it allowed me to develop many skills. It built up my confidence and allowed me to interact well with others. I liked that fact that we had group discussions, that way I gave across my ideas and also heard the views of others.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • My time there was invaluable. I found about more about the background of this firm and what services they provide. I also learnt that their key company values are very vital to them as it keeps them going. At first I was a little shy, but I met some amazing people and it was fun.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I liked the fact that we had some staff come over and tell us their routine, job role and how they got there. This therefore allowed me to ask them questions that would further help me and get me to their position. We had people from the business advisory and the tax department talk to us about what they do for the business, it was interesting.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt and developed many skills, some of which are: leadership, teamwork, staying positive, aiming high, listening and creativity. It also helped me develop key employability skills, and provided me an insight into what it's like to work in a large company. All these skills will further help me to gain confidence and get ready for the world of work.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The insight day was very well structured. They gave a time slot to start and be ready by which in fact I was punctual and ready. The staff set up an interesting presentation with provided us information about the firm itself, some facts about the business and had some amazing group discussions. We also had some staff from different departments come in and talk about their job role to us.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere in general was great. It was a chance for me to develop confidence skills and allowed me to interact with others. The food was amazing and what made it even more special was their own business notebook and pen which we got to keep :) There were people at different age range which made it even more a grand experience.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were told we could email and get put in contact with any people from specific lines we wanted to ask questions on. We also got the email of the student ambassador of BDO to keep in contact with and ask any relevant questions regarding my career path or any general business, financial services queries.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I think we were taught a lot about the sort of roles at BDO. The audit, tax, consulting and technology staff conversations gave a fun feel of what it would be like working in those roles. We were taught about the benefits that BDO employees receive. I think for professional services its a small speck of what can go on. E.g handling very difficult clients, getting in an uncooperative team, having to do overtime etc.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The company seems to care a lot about their clients, and employees' professional development. They also are very keen on their business value and try to behold this in a positive manner. The staff are very motivated and having other enrichment to do other than work motivates them even more to do well.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I never really had much interest about businesses before but the amount of fun I had working in a team and problem solving has really disrupted the tiny speck of an idea I had for a career path. I have a better understanding of my strengths, weaknesses and motivations. And more knowledge on teamwork and the financial services at BDO.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • We were given this opportunity through our school. I then applied and got a confirmation letter to attend this Insight Day. I made my own way there by bus at around half 9 and the event started at 10 am. The day finished at 5 pm and I went back by bus with some friends I made.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes. We got to talk to people in the firm and some of them also gave out their email so we can contact them to ask more questions. Unfortunately, we were not shown around the work force or any departments due to confidentiality and private client work. However the one room we were in was classy.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • We had a couple of Q&A with the employees - panels with workers from different areas of the company. It gave us a chance to learn more on their job role and what each person does for the business. They also got to know more about us for instance what subjects we chose for A-Levels and whether its relevant or needed to any job roles available at BDO.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I learnt a bit through asking workers that they could join clubs and societies. They do plenty of outside activities to refresh their mind and so it is much more fun and exciting. This is what makes employees stay on further and do well. They also plan events, parties, meals.
