The Role
The placement offered lots of opportunity to experience the industry side of accounting. I was able to complete various tasks and gained valuable experience I can use in the future. The location and size of the office was ok, it meant that there wasn’t many in the office at times which can make the day seem to last even longer.
I felt valued in my team and felt myself and my work was appreciated. Working with others at a senior level you can’t always expect a pat on the back for all the pieces of work you do as many people are busy, but the fact they come back to you and ask for more work from you, I assumed that I was producing a good standard
My manager offers a lot of support through out the year. She always ensured I wasn’t struggling with my work and gave time up to discuss further career plans and various meetings over the year to see how I was getting on. Though the start of the placement was difficult as she was unavailable during the first 2 weeks, it was made up for throughout the rest of the year.
At the end of each month was the busiest parts of my day however there was times where I would have nothing to do or would have to wait for someone else to complete a job in order to carry on with my own work. Saying that though the vast size of the company meant if you wanted to do more work you can always branch out to other sites and see if they need any help.
I was entrusted with a lot of responsibility on my placement. The tasks, reports, data I completed and collected for senior management in many different departments. I had to collect data for over 17 different sites across the world, and had to report to VPs and directors across the company
I was given the opportunity to apply many things I have learned at university on my course into my placement. I also thought the placement allowed me to become financial more aware as I took more notice of economic changes and how they would impact the business. The placement also helped improved my team working skills as we all were reliant on each other in order to complete our own tasks
The Company
The atmosphere around my team was good. Everyone was comfortable and conversation was easy. This helped with work as everyone was happy to aid myself with any issues I had with my tasks. I would admit sometimes you were on edge and were worried your work was always under scrutiny as you were delivering this to senior management.
Very organised placement which clearly set out the plan of the placement year. The company provided workshops for interns which allowed us to improve our professional skill set. The company was very organised in creating opportunities for the interns to network with not only themselves but with many other sites around the world.
The company did many workshops to help develop our professional skills. My manager invested a lot of time with me to help me go through my career options and what would be required to get there. Not only that the company always made it clear that they encourage interns to go outside of their work team and work with others in the company

Working from home
I plan to become a ACA chartered accountant and unfortunately Eaton do not offer a graduate scheme which helped achieve this. Maybe in the distant future where I would be interested to go back into industry I could then consider a finance company role at the Eaton, but at this current period of time it isn’t appealing to me.
The Culture
We did go out for food and drinks a lot during my time in the placement. But with the office sometimes quiet and senior management being up and down the country/ world, it was difficult for everyone to go out at the same time. Although this wasn’t the case at Christmas which was a very enjoyable experience
Leamington spa is a student town and has many things to do there. Rent itself is quite expensive with a decent room in a shared accommodation being around £500. I joined the gym which was a 7 min drive away, I went most days after work and even played badminton against the other intern.
I didn’t go out as I didn’t know too many people in the area. When my friends came down to Leamington spa I did go out a few times. There’s many restaurants and cafes in the town, meaning you can always find a very nice meal quickly. Coventry is a short journey away and that is a good night out
With Eaton and especially the office I was in you have to push to try and organise things outside of work. If you want to go out with your colleagues they are always open to do so. I went plenty of times for food and drinks with them. The other intern on site I did some sport activities with and going for walks.
