    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Capital One has provided an excellent experience for myself as a placement student. Through all of the training offered, all of the new experiences in a team environment and all of the vast amount of social events there has never been a dull moment. Every day feels like it presents new challenges which has made the amount of learning I've done since being here feel immense.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Before joining Capital One, despite the positive reviews, I still expected to be treated differently in certain ways due to having a lack of experience. However, during my time here I have been made to feel like my opinion matters in all scenarios and am often asked for my thoughts within the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout the placement there was a wide range of support from figures such as buddies from outside of my assigned team and from a mentor and manager within the team. Between these I was able to receive support in across a whole range of questions as they all had a wide range of experiences to draw upon.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There is definitely a nice balance when working at Capital One, with a mixture of busy and slower periods. The slower periods provide a great opportunity to make the most of the resources and learning opportunities offered, whether this be through taking either internal courses and qualifications or learning from those who have more experience than yourselves.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Shortly after beginning to work here I started to work on real projects within the business in my team. There is nothing that is off limit because of who I am, which has given me a great view of the work that a software engineer at Capital One completes. Because of this I feel I've become a far stronger and more versatile engineer since working here.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • While I have learned much and more about software engineering in my time here, the skills I've learned go much further than this. Such as learning about what it takes to succeed in a highly agile, team environment through interacting with others across the entire business. We have received an extensive amount of training across an array of topics which have equipped me with many transferable skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Capital One has a really positive atmosphere which transcends across all departments of the business, this seems a result of the way that employees feel valued with their roles. The working culture at Capital One is always considered, with the business always making decisions that benefit the employees to make them feel like they belong.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement has been extremely well structured, providing a nice balance between learning through different training sessions and learning within the team that you were assigned to. There have also been a wide range of social events too, which have ensured that there has been a relationship established between the interns, graduates and placement students.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Very heavily. There is so much on offer during your time at Capital One. Since starting there have been many training sessions across a whole range of topics. All employees are entitled to 10% time which contributes towards their learning. There are also many qualifications available to take, whether they be internally or externally certified. There is much more than this but it would be far too much to list!

  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Capital One provides a really vibrant and exciting place to work. There is a real variation in what I have learned in my time here, which has made me feel far more well rounded within my role and as a person. I would recommend them as an employer without hesitation.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is something for everyone at Capital One. During my time here there have been many events especially for interns, graduates and placement students. Additionally, there are many other events that have been for the wider workforce too which has allowed me to connect far more with others around me.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Though I don't live in Nottingham as I commute, which is extremely easy given the transport options available in the area and Capital One's location. Though from others I know that Nottingham is a very fairly priced place to live, with lots to do at a reasonable price.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • With being a fairly large company there are a whole load of activities that employees take part in, ranging from sports teams and clubs to tech events (which Capital One happen to sponsor some of too!). Aside from pre-arranged activities, many colleagues are outgoing and often spontaneously do things after work together.
