The Role
I enjoyed my placement a lot. I felt very involved the whole time, and that my colleagues valued me. Being a third year I felt I was left "more to it" but as a result of this I had a more real experience of the work place and the tasks involved.
I felt valued by colleagues. I felt like a real part of the team, being invited to meetings about tasks I was personally completing and even being involved in social activities. I felt the graduate members of the team were especially helpful in on boarding and helping me settle in.
I felt my line manager gave me adequate support and supervision throughout my placement, but the other younger members of the team really went above and beyond when guiding me. I think the support given throughout was placement was at a really good level, allowing me to feel responsible, without feeling overwhelmed.
Like all summer placements there were lulls, however these seemed far and few between compared to other placements I have done. Other than my first week of completing induction activities, I was busy most of the time. Even if not on real projects learning new things such as software packages.
I felt I was given the right amount of responsibility. I was working on real projects some of the time and felt like I was doing my part. Although this was the case I wasn't overwhelmed as i always had multiple people on hand who always seemed more than happy to help out.
The training and skills I have learnt from this experience will greatly assist my degree, especially due to the software packages i was mentored on. Likewise, I think this experience will help my employ ability when i finish university as the experience i have gained can easily be displayed through conversation in an interview environment.
The Company
The atmosphere was like a typical relaxed office. Teams spoke to one another and my line manager was sat nearby. People often communicated on Skype, however this didn't ,make you feel distant. Overall it was a pleasant and relaxed environment and one in which I found it nice to work in.
On the first day my line manager wasn't actually at work till later that day so i sat about for a fair while. Other than this small hiccup which i think was just an minor error it was well organized. Most days/weeks i would be set tasks by senior members and graduates would check up on me throughout the day to help with anything. Overall it was very well organized!
I felt the company really did invest in me. They allowed me to learn software packages I had had limited experience of for my own growth. I think this really displayed the this of the company and their stance on investing in staff to ensure the quality of their workforce.
Future employment prospects were very appealing in the company. I was made aware of them speaking to graduate and senior members of staff who took time out of their day to discuss such things. I think this time taken only added to how appealing prospects were.
The Culture
Yes the social scene was very good among other placement students. We would typically attend social events together and were all sat in close proximity of one another, not only to for social purposes, but to also communicate our work to one another but to share and help further our learning experience
Quite high
Other than a few pubs it was essentially non-existent.
Quite a few different sports clubs. I myself went to play golf with other graduates and placement students. Overall there was a real feel of graduate run/led sports activities such as running, cycling, and football clubs that people attended after work. Along with this colleagues also ran socials often, and events to go to talks at the ICE.
