The Role
On the whole, it was quite an enjoyable experience. I quite enjoyed the freedom that came with my role; not being micromanaged provides you with a level of independence that contributes, if used properly, to the betterment of an individual, like it did for me.
Acknowledged, yes. In terms of value, you have to make yourself of value to be valued. This just means being hard-working, inquisitive and willing to learn.
The freedom that came with my role meant that a lot of the time, I was to use my initiative in most cases but the support was always available.
For the most part, there was always something to do. If not, the best way to keep yourself occupied is to be proactive and ask (brilliant way to network too!)
They want to make sure that you make the most of your internship so wherever you can be of value, you're likely to be placed.
The Company
Usually quite fast paced but collaborative. Most people know each other and are quite friendly so the opportunities to network on your placement year are endless.
If it was designed to make you feel like a full-time employee then I think the placement year definitely met my expectations. I was accepted as a member of the team and not spoken down to/treated less than that of a full-time employee.
There are several opportunities dedicated to personal development (i.e. Toastmasters). Many aren't explicitly presented as opportunities for personal development but but you'll often find that you can develop skills being on extracurricular projects, taking charge or actively trying to better yourself during your day-to-day work.

The Culture
Interns make an active effort to socialise amongst one another where possible.
London is lively and if that is your thing, there are many local places to frequent and enjoy after business hours.
Yes, but you'll be better off volunteering yourself so that after a while, people remember you and start to recommend you for projects/activities.
