About You
It was very informative and entertaining! They managed to manipulate the virtual aspect to keep it interactive- using the comments box during the 'Get to Know You' segment, the live Retraders simulation etc. Whilst most sessions were engaging, as my background isn't based in Finance, I did struggle to grasp the concepts. Overall I've enjoyed it a lot!
I appreciate the difficulty in transforming into an online platform and I don't think my time has been wasted. Both the staff and other interns have made efforts to form a community during the past three days (making group chats, Q&A sessions, mini competitions etc.). To reiterate, in some terminology heavy sessions my time feels slightly lost as I struggle to understand everyone. However, for those where this is their expertise, it would be extremely valuable- also I was able to learn something from all the sessions so no session was a waste.
In the latter sessions, there was more guidance/support- it may be that I'm applying the knowledge I developed from earlier sessions or the 'teaching' quality of those giving the sessions improved. It would have been nice to have more sector-specific guidance (i.e. Technology), however, I again appreciate this is not as feasible on a virtual platform.
For the specifics of my degree (Bioengineering), not too much. Despite that, it will definitely increase my global awareness in terms of financing, stocks etc, which will be invaluable as I interact with business as I progress in my career. Also, it has piqued my interest in Data Science, AI & Machine Learning which are transferrable to my degree- in that case it has assisted my degree studies.
The Company
As seamless as it could be- some technical difficulties but that is to be expected. Sometimes prompt links did not work and so I had to go back to the original invitation email (which became lost in my inbox as the days progressed) but this is very minor
I really enjoyed it! Both the interns and Citi members maintained a positive attitude. I'm especially grateful for Emma & Chen, who were essentially the main hosts for the programme- they maintained a light and humorous atmosphere and encouraged us to socialise between ourselves. Questions submitted were never ridiculed, and a wide range of answers was happily accepted, where the speaker went on to further explain the correct answer. Thank you, Citi!!
As the spring week was held online rather than in in person, it is difficult to invest personal training to each individual. Despite that, there were recommended resources available for participants to look into in their own time. Also, several speakers took the time to answer questions pertaining to personal development within the industry.
Very insightful- from the many sessions each speaker took the time to give an overview of their experience, role and career journey. There was also time for questions and answers during each session, where participants would enquire about specifics in the full time role- the speakers would speak quite well in depth. It would have been nice to have a more visual layout of the daily routine (diagram)
A lot of insight! I really got a feel for the work environment from the speakers, Senior managers and other members of the Citi team. They were very enthusiastic, friendly and had a good work ethic. They were honest about the company culture and again took time to answer specific questions regarding it.
For me it was quite helpful, although I am not from a Economics/Finance/Business background (rather Bioengineering). I have been considering taking a more technological path in terms of careers, which has proved to be very transferrable in a range of industries- this has been made apparent to me throughout the Spring Insight Week.
Everything Else
Upon originally receiving my offer for the spring week, I was told that we would be reimbursed travel expenses. The process for this was yet to be disclosed. However, given the current circumstance there was no longer a need for travelling (due to the government lockdown) and subsequently no need for reimbursement.
For each session we met a different team member within the company. There were also dedicated Q&A sessions where we could ask very specific questions to the relevant employees. However, there did not seem to be an employee from each division so some specific questions remained unanswered. I believe there may be an opportunity to have contact details of willing employees, but this has not been confirmed.
It's a shame that we couldn't have the networking opportunity in person but that is not the fault of the company! Citi team made a great effort to encourage social activity between interns online, and several networks were created. The interns took it upon themselves to create groups on LinkedIn for the different divisions!
There was not much about extra activities outside of work but I also think that's because it's not a topic that many interns were concerned about. In regards to social activities, many speakers said their week was not too demanding, and had time to be with their friends and families outside of work.
For someone who doesn't come from a Banking background, I still had a great time learning about Finance! It has helped me to consolidate my ideas about the Technology division, and has kept me open-minded about the type of industry I would work in for the future. I've made many connections and have improved my networking skills- albeit virtually.
