About You
The insight was thoroughly enjoyable, with hosts This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions having put a great deal of effort into the program. I feel like I have got a greater perspective into what working in the financial industry would entail and, considering the difficult circumstances with coronavirus, we still had a great variety of different speakers and contacts.
Given that the insight week was entirely virtual, due to the coronavirus, it was always going to be a challenge to connect with other students and the company as well as we could have in person. However, we were made to feel welcome and there were several fun activities in place in order to make us feel like a part of UBS. The fact that several senior workers such as the global head of innovation spoke to us for an hour speaks for itself as to the effort that UBS put into the program.
Though we were not specifically allocated a 'buddy' or helper, we were guided by This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions throughout the week and were allowed to ask virtually as many questions as we could think of at the end of every session, with them both being open to us sending any further questions to them or directly to the speakers after the session.
I didn't really develop any particular skills throughout the program since the sessions were virtual and it only ran over a period of three days, but I certainly have a better idea of which section of finance I would prefer to work in in the future, something which is invaluable from such a short program!
The Company
The insight program was very well structured, with us having over 10 separate sessions over the course of just three days. Each session was well organised and there was plenty of time to ask questions. There was also a specific 'Fitch learning session' which was very helpful as the groups were smaller and allowed us to interact more.
The hosts [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] made the atmosphere thoroughly enjoyable by doing quizzes in the mornings as well as playing a group chosen song at the end of every day, bringing us all closer together in what were obviously unusual circumstances. Given the situation, I don't think they could have done a better job!
Naturally, since this was only a 3 day insight week and we were just there to listen, there was not much personal training and development which occurred. This being said, I learnt a lot throughout the week and felt like many senior executives had given their time up for us which is an investment in us indirectly.
The insight really helped me to understand the link between many of the different aspects of the bank. Since UBS is so wide reaching, it was interesting to learn about all the different perspectives of employees, as well as talking to several recent graduates there, giving me a good insight into what it would be like to have a job at the company.
With the coronavirus crisis in full swing, UBS's creative and well executed response to the pandemic gave me an insight into company culture. This was topped by several of the employees inclusive attitude towards us, making us feel like we were valued by the company. This was exacerbated by their explanations of what the company had done to help with the crisis.
I unfortunately still do not know what I would like to do as a future job, but the program gave insight into many different career paths which I had not yet considered, giving me a clearer idea of what sort of areas I might like to specialise in in the future.
Everything Else
I was not paid for the insight week.
There were several opportunities to talk to recent graduates as well as more senior members of the company (in fact the program consisted almost entirely of this), and they were all very helpful and open to connecting on LinkedIn as well as asking any questions which arose from the sessions.
They were very good considering the difficulty in creating them due to the pandemic.
Yes, we were taken through the daily routine of an employee as well as the charity and volunteering work which UBS do. Employees also took us through several of the perks which UBS offer, such as an in-house gym and days off to volunteer and help the community. We also had a talk by the Optimus Foundation.
Definitely, the insight itself was invaluable as well as very enjoyable. I think the length of three days was also quite good since it allowed us to learn a lot about the company without compromising too much time during revision! I hope to return to UBS in the future for internships or job opportunities.
