    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I did enjoy the insight very much - it was a good insight into what life as an engineer at National Grid entails. The National Grid are always looking for people with strong scientific or engineering skills to join them. I was made to feel welcome at all times and they invited me back for a full time position.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt very valued during my insight. I previously considered teaching as a career but after this insight, I became aware that teaching would involve more effort for less pay than if I were to join the National Grid when I graduated. Therefore, I feel as though the National Grid value its employees very highly.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I was given a lot of guidance - partly for safety reasons but also because I was not expected to know too much about the energy industry - although a willingness to learn was expected of me. This support involved shadowing to online courses and safety training, all of which equipped me well for my full time job.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was able to apply the skills I hade learnt in Excel to my final year project. Beyond that, I was able to decide that I wanted to enter the energy industry upon graduation, and I am glad that the insight gave me a direct route into the company without any further applications.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Well structured given that I was only one of a few participants in my area. The application process was quick and easy and this allowed me to concentrate on my studies during second year. The insight itself enabled me to understand all of National Grid's operations and gain the support I needed to start my career there.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Very good - all of the other participants were from a similar scientific background to me, so we got on really well. There were no office politics or other things commonly found in such an environment. Furthermore, the full time employees made us feel part of their company from day one.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The National Grid invested a lot into our learning and development. They did so for obvious reasons - to invite us to return full time and be well equipped to do a full time job, but also because they recognize the need for graduates to gain the necessary workplace skills to succeed.

    4/5

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The insight was a good pathway to exploring what a full time role would entail. I know this because I now work full time at the National Grid, and realise that although most work is ad hoc, the insight covered the majority of operations that the National Grid undertakes - from sales and marketing to customer service and engineering,.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The insight helped me to understand the companies culture very well. The National Grid aim to provide a consistent service for all users in the UK, and this is embodied in their values. We were reminded of these values throughout - from the application process to the final interviews we had at the end of our placement.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • It was an excellent way to help me to decide that a career at the National Grid is for me. I was able to gain an appreciation of what the National Grid do and the common pitfalls faced by the company on a daily basis. I now apply the skills I learnt during the insight on a daily basis.
