    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was truly an enlightening experience. A lot of creative work was involved, which is what I wanted in the first place. Plus, my team was incredibly nice and supportive, and there are lots of opportunities available at Oracle for personal development, which were super valuable for us as interns.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I honestly felt like I was part of the team, and not in the sense that I was 'only an intern'. I was treated equally to the other employees, given big responsibilities, and asked for my opinion on some of the important campaigns we did. I will definitely keep in touch with my team outside of Oracle too!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was truly the best manager I have ever had. She was very supportive and helpful when I got stuck, her feedback was always either positive or constructive. We had regular 121 calls in which we discussed my week, my challenges, and my successes. And we had regular team-building lunches, and communication was always easy with my manager and team.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was quite busy most of the time, but every now and then it wasn't as busy. For example, in August-November it was a very busy time for everyone, but in December-January things were a bit slow due to the holiday season. I think it was a perfect balance when it comes to this, so I enjoyed it!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In the first half of my placement, I didn't have as much responsibility. I had many supervisors and had to produce content for them. But in the second half, I got a lot more responsibility and creative freedom within our creative campaigns, and I enjoyed it even more. I think in this case there was a perfect balance as well.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I gained while working at Oracle will be truly valuable in my life! Most importantly, I learned how to work with different types of people, I got better at conflict resolution and emotional control, and I learned how to be part of a team. I also gained many hard skills, such as working with the Adobe Suite programs (Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro) and engaging our employees through social media.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone in the office was very nice, polite, and fun. It was always great when all the team was in the Reading office, but most of the time, It was just me and my colleague, who was also an intern. On days when it was just the two of us, sometimes it was a bit boring, but there were days when we had a lot of fun working side by side. On other occasions, we could go to the London office, where all our team was working from, and those days were always super fun and engaging!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very organised. We actually had a dedicated placement manager, who had previously been an intern at Oracle too. She knew exactly what we needed to work effectively and to also have fun from time to time. A lot of events were organised for us, such as volunteering events.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had free access to a variety of tools and online courses on whatever topic we wanted to discover. Plus, we could each get a mentor, who was from a field of work that we were interested in. My mentors were producing videos for Oracle customers, so they helped me develop my videography skill by organising workshops for me and having regular meetings with me.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. Upon completing a long project, one of the managers at Oracle asked me if I wanted to extend my internship and work with them for a bit longer. She also asked me if after I finish my studies I'd be interested to work with her. The support I've got from the team was amazing and if the opportunity will still be there once I finish my studies, I will for sure want to work for Oracle again.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes! Our intern manager organised so many social event for the intern cohort. We got to know each other really well and we have developed friendships for life. We had many lunches, game nights, volunteering events and social events planned for us, which helped us to maintain a good work-life balance in a new city.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in Reading was not very cheap. I moved to Reading from Coventry, and Coventry was a lot cheaper. My rent in Reading was 600 pounds per month, plus bills. I think the reason why it was so expensive was that it was close to London (about 25 minutes by train).

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife was very active. On my street there were two of the big clubs in Reading, and almost every night people were partying and having drinks. If you're into that, Reading is a good place to have fun, meet new people etc. It may be a bit expensive, but it depends on which pub you choose.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were many opportunities to get involved outside of work, such as volunteering events, social clubs (like arts and crafts or the football team), escape rooms, and fun socials organised with my colleagues from work. Sometimes we went to London, which was very close to us, and we had more stuff to do there as well.
