The Role
I really enjoyed my time at IBM. I was provided with lots of opportunity to develop my own skills, whilst also being given time to use my current skill set in environments that we new to me. The process of applying only lasted 1 month which is very good in my opinion.
I felt like I was given lots of responsibilities on my placement year and that most of the people I worked with were very helpful. People were always willing to help, and I didn't feel like an Intern at any point. We were always just treated as employees which was great.
My management team were always there if I needed anything. I spent some time working on client site and my supervisors on that project were also just as helpful. I think it was great having a task specific manager as well as an early professional manager to give a good balance.
I didn't often feel overwhelmed by the work that I was given, but I always had to be engaged. You have to take it on yourself to ask for more work as well as know when to tell someone that you can't do what they're asking because you have other tasks to do.
I was allowed to go out onto a client site which was an invaluable experience for an intern. This experience will hopefully help me as a grad if I am taken back as a full time employee. The work often required you to go out and learn new skills to complete it.
I knew when I applied to IBM that the placement year wouldn't be relevant to my degree in terms of fundamental knowledge. However, the skills I learned and developed will be useful in my degree and in future years to come. I would recommend this placement year regardless of what degree you do.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was hardworking and friendly. Some areas are different to others and you have to learn what is appropriate in each area. The dress code also differed between areas in the office so that was important. I always felt like people were willing to help me with my tasks.
The year was organised extremely well despite the COVID-19 pandemic towards the end. I was impressed with how comfortable I felt when starting up as an employee. There is definitely a reason why IBM placements are so highly rated. It's also great that the current interns contact the new interns to answer questions.
A huge amount, in both time and expense. I felt like IBM offered me a huge amount of personal development during my placement year. They invested a lot of time into my learning as well as giving me the opportunity to go and work with a client which was a great experience.

Very. They have an intern to grad process which gives you a great opportunity to apply back as a graduate without having to go through the whole application process. I am currently doing this and hoping to progress. The also communicate these opportunities very well with the current intake of interns.
The Culture
There were, especially on my project. When working away from home, the atmosphere was great and there was a strong sense of togetherness. We often socialised outside of work, celebrated birthdays, exercised etc. Overall, you can take as many opportunities as you desire, there are plenty out there so get involved!
