The Role
I've loved my job. I've been given tonnes of responsibility and I have a great relationship with the other interns and management. HR recommend splitting your time three-ways, your main role, stretch projects and 101 teams. This split allows you to get a broad experience across the business and loads of networking opportunities.
I feel very valued, there is a good intern community here which is organised by some really supportive HR employees. We regularly have calls, training and events set up by the team which helps us all stay close and as a close-knit community. I know that I'd be able to reach out to them if I was having issues in my role, within the organisation or outside of work.
My manager is close enough that I understand that he is always there however he gives me the room I need to develop myself by giving me autonomy. This independence means that I can take up shadowing in other business areas which he is happy to expense towards my development.
This depends on the time of the year. As it is now currently headed towards the end of the year, it's getting very busy. I enjoy what I do and work with some truly amazing people so I'm happy and able to reach out to them if I need help.
Loads! The work I'm given leads to real business impact and I'm able to see that which is so motivating to me. Additionally to this, the work given to me is fairly independent so you're able to truly make the work yours and drive it as far as you'd like.
The skills developed in my area of the business tend to be soft skills. Interns in other areas clearly differ as they develop technical skills however in my area the main skill I have developed is people management. We're given the opportunity to take training whenever we'd like and it's free of charge, these training's are very helpful beyond our degrees.
The Company
The onboarding is extremely fun and a great way to get to know your new intern colleagues. Additionally to this we have regular calls with the HR team. They also understand that not all interns may chose to come back so are happy to help review your CV to ensure that you are prepared for the graduate market.
Massively! I spent a week in Lisbon learning more about my job role at an all-hands. Additionally to this, we're able to take Microsoft exams throughout the year which are not only beneficial within Microsoft but also support you if you're looking to apply elsewhere. We're also able to go shadowing across the business and spend time in our 101 teams which will your manager will expense.

The graduate positions are very appealing. As far as I know, most of the interns are looking to return to Microsoft. The year we've spent here has been very fun and truly shows an amazing workplace in which I would love to return. The investment made in you and the people here make you really want to return!
The Culture
Yes, this was somewhat ruined due to COVID-19. However, before this we would have great social nights out as an intern cohort. Additionally to this, we would have social nights within our 101 Teams which are intern teams with a focus in specific areas. We have several communities of interns varying my 101 teams and job role meaning that you get to know most of the interns very well and make some great friends.
It wasn't too bad. I know people who moved into university student accommodation which is naturally much more expensive than private or shared accommodation. I moved into shared private accommodation and paid very little in rent which meant by the end of the year I was able to save a very large amount of my salary. I was based in Reading so drinks weren't cheap but far from expensive, if we wanted that we could got to London on the train!
The nightlife was quite good, there are lots of pubs and bars. Additionally to this, London is only a train ride away and therefore we had lots of social events in London, not only with the intern community but also the business. We had a Christmas social in London with the whole of the UK Microsoft community.
I personally didn't find that many. I was based in Reading so I'm sure there would be however I wasn't involved in any. I chose to spend my time with friends after work as there is a good nightlife in Reading and it's easily accessible to get to London. I did, however, see other interns spending time in activities outside of work.
