    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at GSK because I did not necessarily feel like a student. I felt like an actual member of the team. I was valued and deeply immersed in projects that challenged me which made me feel like I was growing professionally. The setting taught me much that an educational establishment couldn't teach me and I will be forever grateful for being accepted for such a great opportunity. It also helped that I had a welcoming team.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Every colleague treated me like an equal and with high regard. I felt valuable to the team and it was known that I was here to serve actual purpose to the business which led to worldwide impact. My team would laugh with me and we would have lunch together despite me being the youngest in the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was like a mentor to me. In fact, I had several mentors but I was given enough space for freedom to try new thing and be given frequent feedback. Feedback is key and allows growth should I act on the advice shared. My manager provided me with weekly one-to-one meetings.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy for much of the time as I worked in the web team and it is an extremely small team so I had to carry much weight. It was fun to be deeply involved, I always had something to do. Sometimes things were hard to juggle but my manager would help me identify what to prioritise.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was the day to day web editor for GSK.com, sometimes I would also communicate and help other markets internationally. I was responsible for much more including running weekly standup, conducting an audit on the web estate, helping to run the assessment centre for the next placement student and preparing an in-depth handover.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My degree helped me bring innovation into GSK and think with a business management mindset. I feel like this placement helped me identify my preferences which in return will help me with my management and provide me with relatable case studies in a working environment. I feel like I have learnt how to be more business optimised as a person.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was always a good level of office banter, never too quiet nor too loud. I felt comfortable and also it was open space. There was never an awkwardness about knocking on doors, we could just wheel over to the person we need to speak to on our wheelie chairs (or stand and walk towards them)

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I feel like there was a lot of paperwork but it is understandable that they and us need to both be diligent signing forms and filling papers so that we have all grounds legally covered to the best of out interests and the companies. The communication was a bit wordy but it was clear neverheless.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was able to join the Digital Leadership Forum where each event would cost hundreds of pounds and yet I was able to go for free. We were provided with LinkedIn Learning and GSK also have their own MyLearning platform which provides more training and skillsets. I felt comfortable asking my manager for opportunities and was always welcome to new suggestions and book that I could use to grow.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I feel like I would definitely work at GSK again in future. The various jobs and roles on my floor where I worked intrigued me and I would consider the graduate scheme and direct entry jobs when I graduate from university despite that I lack a proper interest in pharma itself

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Personally, I found that there was a good social scene and groups with other students at GSK House but I was not very involved with some of these events other than the networking ones and workshops as although I liked the other students - they just were not my kind of crowd, nevertheless I did have a few IP friends.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home and brought a packed lunch with with me at all times because the cost of living in London is pretty high especially for a student. The food was fairly priced but I would expected it to be subsidised a little more as the food and shops were located within the GSK building

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I am not sure, the only reason I had stayed after hours would be when I forget my wallet because I lived far. There is a subway nearby and a kebab shop. There are pubs in the area but I do not drink and would preferably not advocate it as a personal opinion.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Absolutely had a great time being a rep at student fairs as well as joining in at charity dinners. I was able to also go to seminars externally to learn more about digital transformation thanks to the sponsorship with the Digital Leadership Forum. There are plenty of opportunities, sometimes you just need to look for them yourself as they do exist but you just need to look and not be expecting to have everything served to you
