The Role
Really enjoyed being part of a busy and productive team working on genuine pharmaceutical programs that could make a change for so many people. In addition, everyone was lovely and helped make the year as enjoyable as possible.
Definitely felt valued but as placement students you're not going to be able to contribute a lot to some of the discussions you may be present for. But it was really nice to still be able to do work that people were interested to see the results of.
Had really good supervision by multiple people, a line manager, team manager and supervisor. I felt I could go to any of them with problems or questions I might have and had regular meetings to check in on progress.
I felt like I had a good amount of work to do, to the point I never felt like there was nothing to do but not so much work you'd be expected to stay late at work for.
Once you I had been trained up on instruments I was able to run experiments by myself and certain tasks were delegated to me which were for live programs so a good amount of responsibility (which was nice to be valued).
A lot of my skills are very niche as I was in quite a specialised team however the general principles and being aware of these skills would help with returning to industry but likely not for my degree.
The Company
Really nice, a mixture of people working hard and concentrating but also friendly and the odd chat throughout the da.
The overall placement was really well organised, we seemed to be one of the only departments to be provided information even before our familiarisation day which was nice however due to lockdown and COVID, organisation and communication got a bit muddled but completely understandable. Would definitely say it was well organised.
The company / my team allowed me to go to two conferences during my placement year. Not many students had that experience but it was really nice to feel like it was worthwhile for them to send me there so I could come back a bit more knowledgeable about the processes we use.

As placement students there is a fast track process to the graduate program and the fact you worked at the company is already a big step towards being suitable for the program. In addition to this when you apply for jobs your name gets highlighted as a previous student and references can be provided by the people you worked with previously.
The Culture
Placement students great, regular meet ups lots of social sport - climbing and football but n.b. it was arranged by us. Colleagues not bad, we had semi regular lunches outside of work and a really amazing Christmas party so about what could be expected and about as much as what I'd imagine 'normal' colleagues do.
It was North of London in the South East so my rent was about 40-60% more than at university for not really even a nicer house. Socialising pretty good, nothing was really expensive so much as it was just the price you'd expect for the south east but lots of nice social activities you could do in the area. Train tickets racked up a bit as lots of nice places to go near by so keep that in mind.
Pretty good, a weekly night at the local for placement students but not much of a clubbing scene. But unlike when you're at uni, full time work quickly sucks up all your energy so never felt like the night life was lacking but if it was my university town I'd definitely feel like it was.
As mentioned before yes, but not arranged or organised by our employer but arranged by us students as an opportunity to get acquainted. Related to work there's also orange days which are charity days that you can get paid as normal but go do charity which sort of goes under this category. Really nice idea.
