The Role
The experience I gained was even better then I could have expected. It allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. Even tough throughout the time within the company there has been various changes both within the team and within the company, this showed what should I expect in the future once I will start my career after the graduation.
Since the very first day I had a great opportunity to meet a lot of people that were really helpful and welcomed me as an equal member of the team. Throughout my placement I have developed great relationship with my line manager and other colleague, therefore they trusted my while I was working on various activities.
My line manager and other team member supported my since the day one. At the start, I could asked them any type of questions that I did not understand. Therefore, by investing their time into me, I could bring more beneficial results for the team. I would say that support was fantastic
Depending on the time (e.g. before end of the year or Christmas holidays or summer time) there were some months that I was extremely busy due to upcoming deadline, but there was time, that I could be more flexible and could focus on the external training.
For the first few months, while learning about the role, about the project and completing all the required training I did not had a lot of responsibilities. However, as I started to work more and more independently, I adapted a ways of working which allowed me to succeed. Therefore, at the start, expect to be guided and supervised more frequently as at the end of my placement, I was responsible enough so I only had to update my manager one in a while about the progress of the project.
My university degree had basically nothing to do with my role. However, this was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to find out more about office based role (office culture, ways of working), but also, this helped me to understand that I do not want to be back in the lab. It helped me to develop various skills, both personal and professional.
The Company
After working at the office for more that 11 months I would say it really depends on your team. As throughout my time I had to switch my line manager and a team, this allowed me to understand better that working in office could be more 'fun'. Thus, it is a great atmosphere in the office, but it really depends on the type of people I work with.
It was very organised, I knew on what projects I will be working on and what activities I will have. whenever project was completed I knew what should I expect in the near future. Therefore, I believe that GSK have experts in their field who know how to manage a team.
Company has access to various training and development websites that helps to gain more insights on other business roles. You are able to do LinkedIn learning courses or other internal training, such as Prince2 project management courses. Additionally, my line manager and other team mates gave my material to read for understanding more about the role

I have applied for the graduate scheme and at the moment I am waiting for the second stage. It is a great company to work with, however, the competition is very high, thus I it not very easy to get a job right after the end of the placement year.
The Culture
As being based in Weybridge, there were about 30 IP students at the site. This was helpful as we knew each other and it allowed me to build good relationships with other students. Even tough we had various social events at the start, there should have been more of socialising on the second half of the year, but due to uncertain times it did not happened.
Socialising was good during the first few months within the placement. However, after a while you start to spend more time with the people you have developed good relationship with. There should have been more of socialising on the second half of the year, but due to uncertain times it did not happened.
Even tough placement was based in Weybridge, throughout my time with GSK, I lived in London. However, as far as I know, other students were having quiz nights, went out and had a lot of activities together. Everyone were very friendly and organised various IP events, birthday surprise parties and etc.
There were various opportunities to get involved. Considering as it is a large company, you could build professional network for other projects. Also, there has been various charity events where you could both participate or even raise foundation for your own event. There is also opportunity for informal pub quiz, sport socials etc.
