The Role
Excellent week that gave a detailed insight into what it would be like to work for RBS.
They made us feel strongly welcome, no expenses were spared and the week was tailored to bringing the best talent into their organisation. They really invested in the week to provide a valuable insight.
They made sure we were well informed and that if we did have any questions someone was there to answer them.
At every part of the day we were doing something. They provided the time to have breaks when needed, which was invaluable, as it allowed us to take in what we had been learning. At the same time we got a real sense of what a full days work was like at RBS. Surprisingly, we got a full nights sleep every night.
Obviously with the placement being a week long, we weren't able to take responsibility over the banks assets or revenue generating business. However, we were given responsibility to take a lead and work in a team making decisions in trading games etc.
I study Economics, which is clearly a theoretical subject. My week at RBS taught me that markets in practice don't react to changes in, for example, GDP the way an economist would predict in theory. I will take this forward in my degree.
The Company
Obviously it was serious enough to get the work done, but at the same time there was room to have a laugh and a bit of banter with your colleagues.
The week was structured in a way that allowed you to gain a balance between knowledge of investment banking, shadowing current grads. and other things, such as networking and corporate social responsibility.
There was no expenses spared on the insight week. RBS really made us feel like part of the business and it was obvious that a lot of resources were put into giving us a real feel for their business. Furthermore, their current employees stressed that RBS is very much an organisation that wants to see what it can give you, not just what you can give them.
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Definitely somewhere I will be looking to work in the future.
The Culture
Yes, within the week, I think we socialised 3 out of 5 nights.
Quite pricey, but just standard London prices, which were expected.
Great, buzzing atmosphere, especially among my colleagues.
Mainly networking events and nights out in bars etc.
