The Role
I highly enjoyed my Placement with IBM. With diverse range of products to work on and the support given in your development, you feel a real sense of responsibility.
I felt a great sense of value at IBM. Seeing the effect my work output had gave me a sense of value as I saw a difference being made.
I had a rocky start to my time at IBM however the support network from my managers as well as other colleagues really helped me in my position and gave me a great sense of value.
Despite the occasional drop in workload, most days I found myself to have a healthy capacity of work to complete in terms of ad/hoc tasks and on going initiatives.
I was working on European level in terms of business finance, management and operations so felt a great sense of responsibility with my placement. You are given responsibilities from day one at IBM, which again helps with adding value to your role.
I will go back to uni to study Business Management with a practical knowledge of the man\gement and maintenance of a business on a European level. Also, from online learning courses from IBM, I will return to my studies with a sense of direction of where I would like to take my career in the future.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was quiet to start as our office was one of IBM's smaller locations. However the office really picked up after some weeks there and towards Christmas time, I began to really know some other members of the office well.
The organisation leading up to the placement was impressive considering this was run by interns themselves. Replies were fast and empathy from the team was high. When being in the placement, the organisation from managing bodies was good, considering you understood your role and responsibilities.
In terms of my development, i would spend time conducting online learning courses on IBM's internal learning system. I would receive recommendations of courses or 'badges' to study and earn.

IBM offers a wide range of employment opportunities for grads in all of it's business sectors. They really show interest in you applying back for a graduate position, but ultimately want what is best for you.
The Culture
Despite there only being myself and another intern at my base location, We were a part for an intern community with a number of scheduled meet-ups and event both in Manchester and in IBM's South Bank location. I met some great people that I hope to stay in contact with.
I worked in Manchester City Centre and the cost there is fairly high. A lot cheaper than London but prices were still noticeably high, as with every city. The social scene was great when other interns were able to come down from the location in Preston.
Manchester's nightlife is an amazing experience, with a bar or club for everyone, no matter your interests. Its there in Manchester, you just have to find the 'hidden gems' of bars, restaurants and clubs.
Giveback opportunities are highly recommended at IBM. Opportunities to give your time for another cause related to IBM outside of work such as assessment centre for interns were offered to us through email on a regular basis.
