    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was challenging, interesting and overall a great networking expedience. I did not rate it a 10 because there is no clear understanding to my actual jobs. This is a negative and positive point. Positive is that it allows me to explore different areas based on my interests. Negative is that at times I was not sure what exactly to do especially in the beginning.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team I worked with were great from the beginning! They have been welcoming, helpful, and now they’ve become like family. The working relationship has become stronger as months have gone by. There have been some negatives but overall it’s been a very positive experience. It’s become like I have been part of the team since a very long time!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Guidance by my supervisor lacked a little. I was guided with a little way, but generally the overall work was based on my own initiative. There have been some jobs, not related to engineering, that I have been asked to do which hasn’t been the best experience. Guidance from my co-team mates has been very good, and any help and support needed was always accepted and provided to the fullest.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Days are relatively busy because of a set schedule with meetings and project work. However some days were very boring especially since we have returned from shutdown as there hasn’t been much to do. Overall the day, in the morning is good, and busy, but the afternoons tend to be less busy. I therefore dedicate that time to helping my managers with their work. Overall it keeps me busy throughout the day till around 4pm

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the beginning I wasn’t given much responsible. The early days of the internship were not very interesting as I had only a few jobs, barely relating to engineering. As the few months went by, I started getting involved in different projects and now I am co-running two projects, one on headliners and one on door seals. I also took the initiative to work along side the quality specialist in the office to work on problem quality topics, a great experience.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills developed were limited based on the jobs I was given by my supervisor. They included putting up posters, labelling walls etc so this was not very interesting. With respect to my mangers, as well as my quality specialist, they have included me in many projects and that experience of problem solving has greatly increased my skills. Assistance has always been good with any support needed.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office is very relaxed. My managers are very friendly, and create a great experience. It is very relaxed, we speak, we discuss topics, we enjoy. And this atmosphere is translated to outside the office as well. When we meet up for dinners, and outside of work, the atmosphere remains the same. It is a great overall experience with the people I work with. Everyone is very friendly and like family

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The setup was challenging. We had issues transferring my details from the previous intern as well as getting my accounts set up. My work phone as well as not very useful as it was an old Nokia brick. Therefore I had to wait to get that upgraded as well. Once that was all done, it was a better situation. The accounts got set up within the first few weeks. My work phone got upgraded a few months later. This was a letdown

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The investment in personal training and development was limited. There was an improvement in skills but I didn’t not feel that other than being part of the internship and gaining experience there was much investment by the company into any sort of development. This is more targeted to full time workers instead of interns.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects are very limited. BMW group does not generally re-instate interns into a graduate scheme. This is a letdown as it would be a great experience to be able to return and work for such a company. This said I would personally not want to return to the job. With the jobs I was asked to do, this did not really appeal to me. If the jobs I am assigned change then it would have been a great opportunity. Overall the prospects are very low

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was a great intern social group who planned social events every Thursday. This was great and allowed interns from different department, who do not meet at work, meet and socialise at that point. Now with the current situation this has stopped but overall it was good committee who took care of all this for the interns.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The living costs are expensive. Socialising I didn’t take much part in but from what I heard was alright. However I lived at home and hence I cannot give an accurate estimate of the costs of living. This is more based on what I have heard rather than personal experience.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Once again, I didn’t take much part in nightlife but it was relatively good based on what I have heard. The social events were happening every Thursday and because this was constantly happening with many people attending, I assumed it would be relatively good. I am giving a 5 because based on personal experience I am not sure and hence giving a neutral stance.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • With the socials that happened there were some activities that were there to get involved outside of work which was great till time lasted. Now with the current situation it has all died down however overall the experience of outside of work activities was present. With my team, we also had a few dinners, and meet ups outside of work which was great
