The Role
Provided a great insight into the pharmaceuticals industry, gaining a knowledge in large scale business and manufacturing. I was not initially too interested in the placement, as the year has progressed I have managed to steer the placement towards what I would like to learn to allow development allowing me to enjoy the placement even more.
I was treated like a member of the team, we often supported one another as necessary. I do not feel I was seen as any different to other members of staff. On the odd occasion I would feel a task was not suitable for someone in my role, this would be checked by my manager to ensure that work being completed was of the standard work inline with the team. I was involved in projects like a typical process engineer even given a regulator action to take forward.
My manager supported me as much as he could, he lacked experience in this and sometimes did not know how to support me. Other members of the team also supported me where necessary. It was always very clear that I could get help from anywhere and that I could ask any question.
This fluctuated throughout the year, compared to other students at the company I feel I was relatively busy. I have always been involved in several projects at once so I have had to practice time management. When there were quiter periods I could ask for extra work/ support others in my team. This did not happen regularly.
A large amount of responsibility at the right time. For example at the start of the year they were smaller tasks that fed into a larger important task such as reviewing and updating drawings for an upcoming audit. Then I was given equipment procurement and installation as part of an audit response. Then I was given my main project, I have project managed an system installation and design.
Lots of transferrable skills gained and general awareness of business, pharmaceuticals and professionalism. Standard ways of work were understood for example RAMS, PTW and LOTO. All of which are applicable in most engineering industries. New engineering knowledge has been gained that has allowed further understanding in process safety and general engineering.
The Company
Welcoming, open and knowledgable. All members were happy to help in any way that they could. With a wealth of knowledge from different backgrounds.
outline of projects was agreed at the start. But it was clear there was flexibility according to projects that came up that I was interested in or would enable development. Flexibility worked really well for development.
I had regular meetings around development, I visited another site as a result. I did some extra training sessions.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Very- good development, career progression and money. An effort was made to keep me at the site, I was approached asking what kind of role I would be interested in. A tailor made rotation around site was designed to maximise potential.
The Culture
An effort was made among the communities to encourage communication. ensure interaction and knowledge share as well as get to know one another. Several social events were held.
Much cheaper than when at university- very affordable. Limited places to socialise.
Limited- several pubs in the area and not very welcoming to outsiders. An effort would be made to socialise in other ways.
Several in the area- I was personally involved in girlguiding.
