    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was very fun in the sense you get a feel for the pharma cooperate setting, where your work influenced even in the slightest the vaccine/science-papers/trial and testing phases. Opportunities to integrate with other places in the company on the same site would have however been appreciated. i was also the only IP in my department and having more would have been more enjoyable i feel.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleges definitively trusted me as often i was given multiple studies to work on and authorization to work on them had i completed my training for them. I was also talked to like an adult and not like a fresher from uni which is always appreciated. I would say that there were some tasks that i wasn't allowed to do but not because of trust but experience but that is acceptable

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • During covid i have had to do much myself and that is unfortunate as rate of progress is significantly impeded. Whereas on site we would have meetings and one to ones, it isn't quite the same when done virtually done on Skype. I have been given papers to read or topics to research and lit reviews to write. I feel that though they are much smarter than me they appreciate what i bring to the table and help aid me where necessary well.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • During studies and scans, 8am to 5:30 pm. barely any time for breaks. other times when no scanning, i am at my desk all day - you have to appreciate scanning is only as busy as the studies you have to do regarding scanning. the input is often the limiting factor and not our rate of scanning. it is what it is, the balance can not be equaled out better as it is simply demand driven.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot, not not too much. i had access to expensive costly machinery, tools and prized study possessions yet at times especially at the start i would need supervision - which is totally fair. i would also need training but this often was the same as everyone else so i was not treated any differently to anyone else. for mechanical and electrical checks i would not need to come in during Covid however where others did - which i appreciate a lot

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Unfortunately no uni or degree lets you handle an MRI or CT scanner as an undergrad, let alone have they even got the money to afford it - so sadly application of my work cannot help at all in my next year studies, but it is what i would like to do a pHD in (bioimaging) and hence for long term goals i would hope it would be useful. Uni is very cell line focused and gilson pipette focused which is fair because it is affordable and mistakes can be afforded - with an MRI there is not, and they cost like 2 mil a piece so...
