The Role
I enjoyed my placement year at Aldi. The exposure to real business operations was extremely valuable and I enjoyed learning from some really successful Aldi colleagues.
Coming in at the level this placement year is set at is really hard. I think there are a lot of challenges to a placement student when doing that with internal colleagues.
Help and guidance was always very available and useful.
The work load at the beginning varied for me. However, when the placement year properly started the work load was intense. But you work a 10 hour day in order to give yourself the time to complete all tasks set.
You are given real responsibility at Aldi. Every project you work on will have a direct impact to the business and they will challenge you daily. It is scary as a placement student to be faced with the level of responsibility you are trusted with at Aldi, but also an amazing opportunity to prove yourself to the business and also yourself.
I think that the skills and training I have received at Aldi will prepare me well for my final year at Uni. My time management and management of priorities is far better and also I am able to complete tasks in an efficient and concise way. The way of working at Aldi has taught me that.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office is reflective of what a Corporate office is. Everyone takes their job seriously and gets their jobs done to a good standard. The office is quiet but the perfect environment to get your job done.
Due to a number of factors I didn't end up having a defined project plan for my 12 months. This meant I had to proactively sought out things to do. This has benefitted me to an extent, but as a placement student I would have got more out of the experience if I have defined projects from the beginning.
I think the business invest thoroughly into your training.
Future employment prospects are great. It is easy to progress within Aldi if you have the right attitude and are willing to work hard.
The Culture
As there was few Corporate placement students we didn't have a great social scene.
I commuted from home so £0.
The nightlife near the office is quite quiet as it is situated near a small village. However, Birmingham isn't far and the nightlife was really good there.
There was an Aldi netball team which was a great way to meet new people and stay active.
