The Role
Really enjoyed my placement with John Sisk. I found the year fun as well as challenging learning lots of new engineering and personal skills I will use throughout my time at University as well as my future career.
All the colleagues I worked with onsite were all really welcoming and helpful, they made me feel like I fit in. I was able to ask any questions on topics I was unsure about as well as being trusted by them to undertake important tasks.
I worked closely with a senior engineer throughout my whole placement. Every task was explained and showed in detail even when I was given more responsibility I was still given guidance and support by them. Line manager also supported me throughout making sure I got the most out of my placement.
Most days I learnt something new about what happens on a construction site and many were busy and time flew by to the end of the day. Occasional days were slow but is expected on any job.
As an undergraduate engineer I gained more responsibly as my placement went on. As my experience and knowledge increased my responsibility increased however, certain jobs I wasn't skilled enough to carry out alone yet I was still shown and explained the task by the senior engineer allowing me to understand what was happening.
With construction being the practical part of engineering I learnt lots of useful and important information that will help me understand my degree (Civil Engineering). The day to day activities I learnt won't be performed until after University however, after my studies the skills I developed are invaluable.
The Company
Comfortable work environment from day one where everyone was welcoming and worked well together. Professional when necessary but overall everyday was fun to be in the office.
From day one the placement was well organised with no issues arising.
I was placed on multiple training days allowing me to gain skills relevant to working on site as well as being trained on site specific topics. Was also offered to request any training courses I thought I needed to improve my knowledge.

John Sisk offer a graduate programme which looks beneficial to having a career in construction. After having a brilliant placement would look into this once I graduate.
The Culture
I started my placement with another student which made the start of my placement more comfortable as we were both new to construction and learnt a lot new things together. Social nights were organised with colleagues which were all fun getting to know them outside of a working environment.
I worked in Birmingham which as a major city I found to be reasonably priced. Lots of different areas at varying costs so can accommodate to different price ranges. Lots of social activities to do in the area, most to be cheap as have a lot of student prices.
Worked in the city centre so had a lot of varying nightlife
Social nights were organised throughout the year to get to know each other outside of the office.
