    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This was the biggest opportunity I received throughout my academic and future career journey, and I could not be any more thankful. The experience was not only unforgettable in terms of the amazing projects I got involved in and, but also the great Oracle community that I work and network with. Everyone was helpful and willing to share newly discovered knowledge every day. Saying that this experience was nothing but a blessing would be an understatement.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I really appreciate how everyone in Oracle is very grateful for the entry of new interns every year. Being the new, younger generation, it is possible that during a meeting or project discussion, an intern could have an idea that other experienced people would not have come up with, essentially providing a more creative approach. I feel extremely valued by my colleagues not only in that area of contribution, but also just by simply being able to be part of their social circle during breaks or events, which really helped me transition smoothly into Oracle's work environment.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As an intern, you would start from the bottom, still new to the technology and business terminologies used in your workplace. The real working world may also be a first big jump from your comfort zone of being in University. My colleagues understood how overwhelming it can be in the first few weeks. They have been nothing but super helpful and supportive of anything I did not understand or struggle in to get working, software and other tools wise.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I personally not only enjoyed the work that I do, but also the chance to venture out and hunt for interesting projects, potentially collaborating with other teams throughout Oracle. This is what I personally love doing, and that is consistently keeping myself active and engaged in what is going on in the Oracle business. On the other hand, I also have times where that workload is completed and there are gaps for breaks to take a breather and relax. To put it simply, I had a very good balance between work and fun in my workplace.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The amount of responsibility you get, in my opinion, is dependent on the work that you choose to take and contribute to. For me, I personally enjoyed hunting for a load of projects since the start of my placement. This gave me a responsibility to manage my time well between these projects, produce great results and also ensure that I actively attend to essential meetings and intern events at work. I would not say that I am not always running the show, but when I do get the chance, it is the best opportunity to learn, discover and apply.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There were many new skills introduced to me during this placement. From soft skills like storyboarding and storytelling, to technical skills such as data analytics, PL/SQL, and JavaScript. For soft skills, this would not only help in future career opportunities, but also teach me how to drive a business and also learn on how to grab the attention of my audience in any kind of meeting or event talk, for instance. The technical skills developed were new, and they were an essential addition to the languages that I understand and am adapted to in Computer Science, which would prove useful in future university projects and even opportunities to take up different roles in the technology industry.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I never knew what it was like working in a corporate environment until I got this placement offer and opportunity to work in Oracle. From the many months that I have been in Oracle, I can say that the atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. Here, I am emphasizing that the people in my department were very welcoming, lively and friendly, and the atmosphere was never tense or too overly serious as the environment was quite an open space where people can come over to one another and have a casual chat when break time comes, and you are not confined to working in one space.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was quite well organized. Sufficient introductory sessions were provided, and opportunities were widely available outside of us interns' daily roles in our teams. Anything to do with submitting your timesheet and also learning how to book rooms, for instance, was also well explained. There was also the opportunity to have a number of sit-down sessions with the previous batch of interns if any more questions arise from the interns' end. Overall, I can say that the arrangement and organization of the placement was great. I had no trouble transitioning into the work environment.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had very similar training and development opportunities and any other full-time employee in the workplace. I had access to multiple learning platforms and also training that is optional for me to take and attain a certification of completion, which for some can be included into my LinkedIn as well, showing a certain degree of experience in the area of training. Overall, I can say that my workplace has sufficiently invested in me as an intern to also learn, discover and grow with everyone else in the company.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects within the organization are very appealing for several reasons. First, the role that I am currently is a role that I am very happy with and can be passionate about as I take up more projects and opportunities along the way. Second, I am familiar with the work environment of my workplace and the people that I can connect and be friends with. There many more reasons for this, but nevertheless, I see great employment prospects in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I can say that there were many good social scenes among all fellow interns and even colleagues. To begin with, we interns had our own social circle as the new people in the workplace, but we also have other various social circles of our own team and project teams that we are more than welcome to sit with. As an intern, I was given the freedom and flexibility to sit and connect with whoever I am comfortable with, and existing colleagues in my workplace are also very friendly and welcoming, so yes, a great social scene amongst fellow interns and colleagues.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area where I live was based on my own personal choice. Safety and comfort of the area was the number one priority, and with that, also comes a compromise in terms of living cost, especially if one lives close to the city centre. It is essential for new interns to be close to basic amenities and essential shops in order to adjust to the new living environment. My area, in particular, can be very quiet during night time which is ideal, despite being near the city centre. Socialising with friends was also pretty decent in terms of financial spending, so perfectly alright in that area. Therefore, the cost of living and socialising really depends on where an intern chooses to live, whether it is further out from the city centre and requires having your own car, or living very close to the city centre, having all amenities and shops nearby.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was pretty great in most days. However, I am not personally the kind of person who does a lot of nightlife activities. Rather, I enjoy having nights playing community sports such as basketball and football. That was my personal way of having some fun and a short break from my everyday job. The nightlife can indeed get considerably lively, especially when university students in the area come out to have a night out.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • As mentioned in the previous questions, I personally had a way to have fun outside of work, and that was getting involved with the local basketball and football community. Aside from that, the university sports facilities are widely available, but would, of course, require some monthly payment to use. My workplace also arranges and plans activities that involve the local community and not just those part of the workplace. This is actually very good, as this is an opportunity for me and other interns to be able to engage and talk with our colleagues when we are outside of the work environment.
