The Role
I have really enjoyed my time at Pfizer. I enjoyed gaining insight into the commercial sector of the pharmaceutical industry and loved meeting new people, making new friends and building up a professional network for future employment. The workload was varied, being fast-paced and often challenging, which was something I relished. The company gave a lot of support during the covid-19 crisis and so I still felt like an integral part of the team, contributing to shared goals and company objectives, even whilst working from home.
I was lucky to work with various different teams on different projects, and so working with a number of colleagues. I felt valued by my colleagues and a useful part of the team. This was demonstrated in the recognition awards received.
My manager made sure to give me the support I needed in order to gain experience and skills relevant for future employment. They were invested in my personal development and were able to assist in my growth. My team was a particuarly busy team and therefore it was sometimes difficult to get the support needed for some of the workload I had. This was made more difficult by lockdown/working from home, but I have found that it was OK overall.
On some days (particualarly the start of the week) I felt really busy. Nearing the end of the week I felt less busy. I feel as though I had an ideal workload, as times where i was less busy, I worked on my personal development, reviewing my individual development plan and taking part in additional training such as harvard mentor manage.
I was responsible for project managing an event which accounted for 20% of the team's annual spend. The responsibility and accountability that came with managing this task was high, but I felt motivated to succeed by being given this autonomy.
I have gained excellent project management skills, stakeholder management skills, communication skills, the ability to work within a team and the ability to maintain resilience in the face of challenges and roadblocks. I believe these are some of the transferrable skills that I have developed which will support me in my final year of university and my future career. Project managing events has given me time-management and organisational skills which will be really useful in my final year of university
The Company
I enjoyed the office atmosphere - the office was clean and quiet and so easy to work. The atmosphere was social and I really enjoyed that.
I feel as though there could have been a little more work into making sure students had similar experiences whilst on placement at Pfizer. My time was great and I really got the most out of my placement, but I'm not sure if this was the case for everyone. Overall the set up was good however, with training at the beginning of the year and catch ups throughout.
My manager gave a lot of support in ensuring that I developed skills and qualities over my placement. The company made resources such as harvard mentor manage available so that we could upskill ourselves in various areas. They also ran training sessions weekly which were really useful in learning about change management, leadership without authority etc.

Working from home
I am really interested in working within the healthcare industry for the forseeable future. Therefore pfizer remains very appealing to me and I have applied for their graduate scheme. The company has really shown its compassion for colleagues over the past few months, supporting us through covid-19 and speaking up for BLM movement and LGBTQ. Their values align with mine and that is something I will continue to look for in future employment.
The Culture
I made some really good friends over placement year! It's sad to think that when we all return to univeristy we will be all over the country. We had lots of social events on the weekends, and a christmas meal out as all of the undergrads.
My rent wasn't that expensive, but being close to london naturally eating out and going to bars was expensive.
You would need to go into London really for Nightlife.
A few, but none that I really took up. I know that they had running and football clubs and yoga sessions.
