Woodshop Technical Planning Review

There were parts of my placement I really enjoyed, working with some incredible cars and getting an insight into the developement of new models before the public. I also had the oppertunity to do some interesting jobs, working in different departments for extended periods seeing how they opperate. Interns usually get the oppertunity to tour different bmw group factories in the UK which is a fanatstic experience. However, partly due to managerial changes I was often left without direction and had to get on with things myself. Consequently, I did find there were times when I didn't have much to do. I don't think all interns experience this and I think my managers were aware of this and will hopefully improve the situation for the next intern.

Everyone I met at Rolls-Royce were very friendly and easy to get along with. They are always happy to point you in the right direction and help you where they can. One area I feel could be improved on was I did not always feel completely trusted by my colleagues. There were times when I was lacking workload and would seek out my colleagues to help them with jobs they had, but did not feel they always trusted me to do anything other than the most simple of tasks. I felt that there were many jobs I could have helped them with that would have helped reduce their workloads but they seemed reluctant to engage with me. I feel co-operation with interns could have been better in my department. Despite this they were always friendly, and the other interns and younger members of staff are usually very keen to engage with you.

Some of the managers I felt were a bit preoccupied with their workload and it was up to me to engage with them. However, the manager that took care of me for the majority of my placement I felt was always looking out for my best interests. Despite a heavy workload and shifting environment for him I think he always tried to make sure I was busy, which I appreciated immensely. If my plcement hadn't been cut short by coronavirus I think he would have made sure I'd had a productive end to my placement.

I had some daily tasks, that would usually take up and hour or two in the morning. However, I never felt the need to stay late unless I was given an urgent task in the afternoon and often found myself waiting for the end of the day.

I was given some responsibility and had some important tasks during my placement. I felt I was most often given responsibility when tasks were urgent and someone would come to me for help in the final hour rather than from the begininning. I feel it also depended on which colleague I was dealing with. Some were keen to give me responsibility and others not.

Despite my grievances, I do feel I learnt a lot from my placement and where I want to go afterwards. I feel a gained a good insight into the manufacturing world, and ulitimately decided I don't think its the industry for me. I feel a placement year is a great oppertunity to better prepare yourself for the world when you graduate, and I am more prepared for the final part of my degree. Rolls-Royce does give you a unique experience and is a great name to have on your CV.

Chilled atmosphere and lots of the people are keen to engage in activities outside the office.

I feel the oganisation from the company was good but the organisation of my department wasn't.

Only there for 8 months so not a lot of training invested.

I feel there are lots of oppertunities to progress at Rolls-Royce and you also have the option to move within the BMW group which is a big bonus. Not many graduate rolls however.

People were friendly and keen to meet up after work usually.

Very reasonable compared to other parts of the country. Not as cheap as some areas in the north I suspect.
