The Role
It was truly an amazing experience and I'd recommend everyone to apply! The training process was superb- we had 3 weeks with a specialist provider that taught all the skills necessary in terms of accounting and financial valuation. There were also frequent talks from all areas and seniorities of the business to help us really understand the firm as a whole. We also got the know the other interns socially, as well as through group projects. All in all, the team did an amazing job organising a comprehensive and informative internship experience for us- especially considering it was all virtual!
I honestly could not have asked for more from my team/desk. They were an absolute pleasure to work with, and always willing to jump on a quick call to introduce themselves, talk about their experience and answer any questions at all. They really went above and beyond in helping, and were willing to take time out of their (very busy!) days to explain a concept or even just catch up. This was even the case for more senior members of the team!
I terms of my assigned manager, understandably, they were very busy. However, they still made time for a quick catch-up call every week, and provided measurable indications of my performance through a mid-internship review. In addition, they even took time to explain a more complex point to me and acted like a mentor- which was very appreciated! We worked on a case study where we were also assigned additional sources of support/more junior supervisors. They were an invaluable source of help for this and were more than willing to provide as much guidance as I needed.
Due to the virtual nature, it was more difficult to assign us the tasks that would have taken place during a 'normal' internship. Therefore, there were times where we didn't have too much to do and more free time that I would have liked. However, as we had a case study there was always something to work on and the team was great in providing materials for us to look over and learn from when we weren't busy.
As it was a virtual internship, there were understandable compliance issues. Therefore, we were not able to do much 'actual' work or given 'real' responsibility due to the team working on things that were MNPI. However, of the research-based tasks that I was assigned I was given more responsibility than I was expecting and we were given a lot of trust from the team. We also completed an independent mock case study that we took ownership of from start to finish.
The training process was very comprehensive (3 weeks in total) and the teaching quality was very high. I definitely learnt a lot. In terms of my degree studies, I see it was a complement to my economics degree which is very theoretical. It was great to gain some practical skills and be able to apply them in action. I also gained a lot of familiarity with excel and powerpoint which is less required in my degree but vital beyond it. Overall, it was a great introduction to investment banking and provided me with a lot of skills that will really help me in this area.
The Company
Unfortunately, as the internship was virtual I can't comment on the actual office.
I’m honestly so impressed by how organised an experience the Junior Talent Team were able to provide- especially since so many changes had to be made last-minute and there were inevitable difficulties with technology. There was a packed schedule of activities so we could experience as much as possible, and each session flowed into the next with few difficulties. It was also very well organised in terms of having a week of introductory talks, 2 of intensive training and 3 of working with the team, both on assigned tasks and a case study- therefore there was a good balance.
As aforementioned, the traning was very comprehensive, and there was a definite feeling of the firm investing in us and helping us learn everything we could.
Financial Bonus
Working from home
I was lucky enough to be offered a full time role with the firm. In general, conversion was very high in my team, as well as across the others. Therefore, there was a sense of the firm wanting to invest in us and welcome as many of us back as possible! I’d definitely recommend Bank of America in this respect, in terms of valuing interns as potential future employees and creating a work culture were everyone is encouraged and supported.
The Culture
This was more difficult this summer, but we had intern quizzes, groups tasks, and team virtual drinks.
As it was virtual N/A. However, the costs in London would have been as expected.
As it was virtual N/A. However, it would have been good in London.
Once again due to being virtual these were hard to arrange. However, outside of our day-to-day work, there were many activities organised. A particular highlight was the strong focus that Bank of America places on giving back and on employee volunteering. We were able to be given a taste of this through virtual volunteering schemes. This included a group task (where we worked with interns not only in Investment Banking but across S&T, Technology, GTS etc.) that looked into he firm’s ESG framework and involved us pitching an idea to increase BAME representation. We also volunteered with Debate Mate and mentored those in secondary school.
