    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • I highly enjoyed the virtual experience with Jefferies. The EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020 was highly insightful. It was great to meet a vast range of employees from Investment Banking, to Equity Research, to Equity Sales and Trading. I hugely enjoyed learning about Jefferies culture, the various divisions within the firm, and hearing from junior to senior employees themselves. I appreciate the knowledge, insights, and experiences shared during the event from the speakers, which I found immensely helpful.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt extremely valued during my time at Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020. All information was shared very seamlessly through a presentation and many employees were eager to meet us and share their experiences - even several members of senior management at Jefferies joined the event. During the event, we were able to ask questions throughout that were then clearly answered - I felt strongly valued, which I am sure the rest of my cohort would agree with.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • I received lots of guidance and support during Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020. The reason as to why is due to two main reasons. The first reason why is because of the team's great insight into the application process, accelerated interview process, the firm, deals they have been working on, what they look for in a candidate and how we can implement all things necessary. The second reason is because of the team's kind and supporting nature even after the event - many employees I reached out to on LinkedIn and email got back to me and were very happy to help me with any questions, catch-up, or application tips. Overall, great support given from Jefferies.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The information I received will most definitely assist me in my degree studies and beyond. I now know what topics will be covered in the role at Jefferies, which will help me when deciding which elective modules to choose, societies to join, and when completing my dissertation or coursework at university. The skills I developed will assist me in my degree studies and beyond to a certain extent. I developed great listening skills when listening to employees sharing their experiences and advice, and communication skills when asking the employees questions. However, during university and beyond, time management skills are also important - this was not developed during the event. Overall, it was fantastic for a one day event!

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020 was very well structured. We received a timetable at the start of the day highlighting the sessions and their time slots, as well as the full name of the employees who will be covering each session. Throughout the virtual experience, the time slot was stuck to (great time management as we also had Q&A sessions throughout each session). We also had a break in between sessions which was also stuck by in terms of time.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • The general atmosphere during Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020 was a very positive one - friendly and welcoming, surrounded by ambitious and driven individuals. I hugely enjoyed being surrounded by a group of students and employees who were just as ambitious, driven and passionate in finance as myself. Employees were also very friendly and eager to help, answering any questions one may have and ensuring that all students have the opportunity to ask any questions and learn as much as they can. Overall, due to the very positive experience, I would love to work for the firm in the future due to the nature of their employees and atmosphere created, as one of the factors.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • For a one day virtual experience, Jefferies invested greatly in our personal training and development. They did this through teaching us in depth about the division, role, what is required from us to to succeed in that position and how to achieve this goal. All in all, this knowledge shared is crucial to our development. If we had more time, I would have liked to be trained technically too - for example, if interested in investment banking, valuation methodologies could be taught or resources shared (DCF, comparable company analysis).

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020 was highly successful in ensuring that I understand what it would be like to have a full-time role with the company. The reason why is because of the vast range of areas Jefferies touched on - from diversity groups, to volunteering and charity commitments, to awards achieved, to the division itself and previous deals, to what the actual role itself entails and hearing the experiences from junior to senior employees themselves.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020 was highly successful in helping me understand the company culture. The reason why is because of the vast range of areas Jefferies touched on about the company - from different diversity groups, to volunteering and charity commitments, to awards achieved, to the division itself and previous deals, to what the actual role itself entails and hearing the experiences from junior to senior employees themselves. The company's core values could have been touched on further when giving examples but overall, it was very well explained.

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • The Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020 was a one day virtual event which allowed us to learn more about the various divisions (Investment Banking, Equity Research, Equity Sales and Trading), the firm itself (values, volunteering, charity commitments, awards), and hear from junior to senior employees themselves about their experience in the company. Therefore, being paid or reimbursed was not needed for this experience as no personal expenses were made during my participation in the event.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were plenty of opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company, during Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020. For example, we had various sessions on different topics in which we could learn more and ask questions. We also had a Q&A panel discussion with junior employees and another one with senior management. Having break-out rooms would have enhanced the networking experience further but overall, it was great! After the event, I reached out to the employees on LinkedIn and received a response from many of them eager to help and happy to meet me.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, during the Jefferies EMEA Next Generation Diversity Symposium 2020, we were able to find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work. For example, groups with a focus on ethnic minority, women, or those of LGBTQ+. We were also able to learn about volunteering and charity commitments. It was great to have heard from employees that are already involved in the focused groups; it would have been even better to hear from those in volunteering opportunities too. Overall, it was amazing!
