The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I was fortunate enough to meet plenty of kind, interesting, knowledgeable people and carry meaningful work. I was able to develop many of the valuable skills I was hoping to use. I got to understand the company's operations quite well and learn from several of the sectors that comprise the business. I also attended very interesting events, activities and courses which helped ensure that my experience was varied throughout. It was a great place to work in.
I felt very welcomed from the beginning. Everyone in my team was welcoming and supportive. I felt no restraint in talking with them. Moreover, I was invited to various social gatherings throughout the year which helped me get to know everyone better. Thus, I really felt that an effort was being made to integrate me into the team. They would also periodically provide feedback on my performance and overall presence which, in turn, helped me better understand how to become more valuable.
I was given much support from my managers throughout the year. They would provide me adequate briefing for all objectives and ensured I knew where to find the best support whenever I needed it. We also held quarterly meetings to review my progress and expectations. This helped tailor my day-to-day to ensure that I was having the best experience and achieving agreed objectives. This was supported by weekly catch-ups. They were also very understanding whenever I shared personal concerns.
I was busy on an ongoing basis. My work comprised various projects which demanded frequent attention and so I had to put effort into keeping everything up to date. Even though at times it felt a bit daunting, I was able to cope and found help/support as soon as I needed. There always was some work to do, meeting to attend or activity to participate in. However, I felt that I could take a break whenever I needed it.
I was definitely given some level of responsibility throughout my stay. There were a few projects where I was expected to lead meetings, organisational tasks and general work. This helped me develop my confidence and prove myself as a leader. However, given that I am an intern, there was much other work where I was more of a role player and carried more menial work. I did feel like my team's trust in me evolved through the year as I was delegated more work.
There are many developed skills I definitely look forward to employ in my studies. To start with, I have never had as much experience at presenting as I did in my internship. This pushed me to develop my confidence much more and habituate into being increasingly calm at important gatherings. Keeping track of deadlines, emails and changing demands made me more adaptable and organised. I also attended various courses which taught me to harness my creativity and focus. These are all key traits which will help me tackle my final year of studies.
The Company
It was honestly great. The workspaces were set in an orderly fashion with good ventilation and lighting. Noise levels were always good. Everyone was free to stop by any desk and consult doubts. We would have frequent meetings involving everyone around and there always were jokes and a good attitude from everyone. I also valued the recurrent opportunities to learn more about others' work through voluntary lectures. We would also celebrate common festivities such as Halloween and Christmas. It was an excellent environment to be in.
It was set satisfactorily. All interns received proper induction briefing and so you would feel better prepared for what to expect throughout the year. I was then placed in a team separate from other interns and, though I grew fond of my colleagues and appreciated the importance of their work, I wish there was some sort of rotation scheme where I could have been exposed to different functions in manufacturing. A significant part of my time I felt I was simply shadowing my manager. I must however acknowledge that everyone's experience is different
Very much. I completed a vast amount of training throughout the year, many of which were encouraged by my manager. A method would be online in the form of ethichs training, export control, posture and desk hygiene... I also participated in various classroom courses where I learned about high-performance culture, the different sectors in manufacturing, interacting with automation and many others The company offers numerous courses anyone can sign up for. There are always new things to learn about.

I hope to be offered to come back. Rolls-Royce is at the forefront of fascinating, fast-evolving sectors in manufacturing, aerospace and defence. It is a marvelous chance for one to become a proficient engineer and take advantage of the latest technologies and professional networks. There is a great company culture where everyone has access to wonderful support, benefits and outside opportunities. I am manifested my interest in coming back but I am cautious given that the current global circumstances have made graduate opportunities increasingly difficult
The Culture
There was an excellent atmosphere with fellow placement students. We would always spend lunch together and take interest in each others work. Additionally, we would often meet outside work and participate in fun activities or have dinner. I always felt l could get support from them. There were many opportunities to meet new people through events organised by the local intern network. However, many people were unaccesible on weekends as many returned to their homeplace whilst I had to stay locally
There were various opportunities. I am an affiliate member of the IMechE so there often were opportunities to support STEM events around my area. There were also the chance to learn about robotics and automation through company-owned mobile robot arm manipulators. We would often take these to schools and show children the wonders of developing technologies. Lastly there were various charities to help the local community as well as good gyms/sport centres to keep fit.
