The Role
I really enjoyed my time here at Discover. The atmosphere and culture is amazing and the last eight weeks have gone by in a blink, with everyday providing new and interesting opportunities to learn and develop. I would definitely recommend this internship to others as it allowed for interns to contribute and get involved in working projects as well as build connections with others.
I felt that my colleagues particularly valued my input as an intern throughout the 8 weeks. Intern ideas were listened to and incorporated into the final project, with our contribution being seen in the output created. Working in a team as also very rewarding as it allowed for team collaboration and a community atmosphere.
From the very first week, the support and guidance given from our supervisors was absolutely excellent. Not only were we able to give feedback about the internship and how we were doing in relation to the work, the guidance gained in the regular meetings with supervisors and program managers allowed us to keep on track to reaching our internship goals, supporting us through the entire process.
The day to day balance was very good. The internship started off with a lot of allocated hours for training sessions and from there the workload was at a good level. There was enough to get involved with and be challenged but not be overwhelmed by.
At the beginning of each week, the tasks to be carried were planned, and each intern was assigned to tasks that they had the skill set to complete. This mean that there was ownership over each task, allocating responsibility which was constructive in getting things done.
I think that the internship helped me to develop a huge range of skills, both technical and non-technical, which I think will be incredibly useful moving forward. The training week was particularly valuable in providing a wealth of information related to decision making, problem solving and communication and the project work itself gave great insights into how teams create software.
The Company
The atmosphere was positive and inclusive, and one that I really enjoyed working in.
Even while considering it was a virtual internship, I think the overall set up was very good. I was able to make connections with others, and the 8 weeks overall was well paced.
I think that the company invested a lot into the personal training and development of their interns. Through access to different online courses, training week and providing opportunities to present, Discover went above and beyond in providing opportunities for interns to grow and I think that this is definitely one of the things that stood out throughout the whole process.
Working from home
I think the future employment processes are really good. The company values technology and it values people which I think makes it an interesting place to work.
The Culture
Even in the virtual settings, family meetings allowed for people from all locations to interact with each other, providing this social aspect.
