The Role
I really enjoyed my work placement as I was treated the same as all other employees despite only being there for 13 months. I was challenged and given responsibilities which allowed me to develop many skills like teamwork and leadership. I enjoyed learning about the company and having opportunities to engage with other interns on visits to other Lockheed Martin sites. The company offers great employee benefits like having every other Friday off which made working there very flexible.
I felt very valued by my colleagues as they always listened to me and valued my opinion. They were always happy to help when I got stuck, and asked me for my help when they were stuck. We engaged not only on a professional/work level but also personally, which allowed me to develop friendships in my team and in the wider office environment. This made my placement a lot more enjoyable because I felt comfortable in the workplace
I felt very supported by manager as I had regular catch up meetings to see how I was getting on at work and also in my personal life too. This involved talking about my work load and any concerns I had with the work I was doing. We discussed the assignments I had to submit for University which helped me complete these to a high standard.
I was just the right amount busy most of the time. However, sometimes I felt more busy than usual if something urgent came up which only happened occasionally and other times I didn't have as much to do. My manager would regularly discuss my work load and if I had too little to do I was given more responsibilities and projects to work on. My team were always happy to help me out if I was too busy to complete everything in time.
From the very start I was given a lot of responsibility, which made me feel like a valued team member. It also allowed me to develop many skills like resilience, leadership and teamwork. I was given my own duties which I was responsible for completing. As well as this I was given my own projects to work on. This presented many challenges that I had to face and ultimately allowed me to learn so much more than if I was never given these responsibilities.
The skills I have developed over my work placement will help me tremendously. Not only for the remainder of my degree but in my future career. I have learnt how to work in a business environment which includes things like email etiquette and communicating and socializing in an office. Also, technical skills like using Microsoft Excel and SAP will help me in future jobs. I have developed my teamwork, leadership and communication skills which should help with projects a University as well as future jobs.
The Company
The atmosphere of the office was very calm with some chatter and it was normally fairly quiet. The kitchen was a lot more sociable when going on tea breaks which was great as you're able to talk with people on the other side of the office.
It was very organized. I had a 6 week handover period from the previous intern which was well planned out and covered everything I needed to know. I was left for a week by myself in the middle of this to allow me to work independently. When the intern returned I was able to ask questions and learn a lot more from the week by myself. I knew exactly what I was responsible for over my placement.

The Culture
There was a great social scene within my team, we met up outside of work which was always fun. However, I was the only intern in my office so there wasn't any socializing with other interns, other than when we visited other Lockheed Martin sites for intern events.
