    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • The virtual experience included all the elements of the face to face internship from HR training sessions, skills sessions and even a few virtual social events to help meet with other members of the cohort. It was amazing getting hands on experience for the team that I was places in. Working with colleagues in different teams helped me to learn a great deal about my role in Barclays and the wider role technology has within the bank. The various training sessions were very helpful as we progressed through the internship and the HR resources available helped enhance the learning experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Working on the different tasks that I was given blended the different skills expected of a potential grad very well. The atmosphere promoted asking questions and learning more about the specifics of the project that my team was working on. Through working with many different teams I picked up useful skills whilst also positively contributing towards the progressions of the various analysis tasks my team was working on. There were also many opportunities to meet other people in the team and the wider division. Getting to know and network with everyone was very fun.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • The guidance that we received was from the HR teams, training sessions and withing the team that we were working on. It was especially helpful in the beginning few weeks when I was just starting to understand the function of the team and what is required of an intern in order to do the work to a high standard. If there was ever any questions about the program or in general we could receive guidance from the HR team or previous grads that were introduced to us as part of Barclay's buddy scheme.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In university it is often a focal point to learn as many hard skills as possible. As I'm in a technical role this involves learning programming languages along with other technical skills. The internship covers and teaches what is required of a grad in the team. The soft skills that were picked up isn't something that is often encouraged in various university courses. The experience will be crucial for your later career as you learn an adapt what you have learnt to later jobs in your career.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • The virtual experience was filled with training, networking and skills sessions that were well places in every week of the internship program. This also helped learn how to manage time properly as many of these sessions were mandatory. The balance was fairly good for how far apart the sessions were spaced out but some days were quite busy in handling everything. Overall the skills sessions were particularly helpful in our various projects as they covered information not taught in university.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • The team meetings and interactions were very frequent. There were meeting daily where you can ask questions about the projects or tasks that you are working on if you need any help. There were also weekly HR sessions to help out any general issues that particular interns might be facing. There were a few socials for all of the interns to join in on but due to the nature of a virtual program the contact here was rather limited. All together the atmosphere did still promote a helpful environment where you are encouraged to learn as much as possible.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were many opportunities to learn more throughout the internship program. There were sessions that were with teams in other countries going over all of the soft skills and networking tips that we could use for the internship and later on in life. The various sessions also let us access another internal system where we can access documents and videos to learn more about technical skills we can develop. Overall it was greatly encouraged to learn more though the various systems and training offered.

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I also took part in the Spring internship the year before and there is a missing aspect when the internship isn't face to face in terms of getting to know your team very well. That being said, the skills learnt over the internship are matching the skills and level of work that would be expected of a full time grad. There are many skills that you pick up from working in a team which you can't learn elsewhere - hands on experience was the best way to pick up these skills and will be very useful in the future.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The virtual experience was very helpful in aiding my understanding of the company culture. Barclays has the core values of Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence and Stewardship which is demonstrated not only throughout the different projects that my team is working on but also on a daily basis. We are greatly encouraged to demonstrate these values and to learn about how these values helps promote growth and aides in helping you and the greater team perform to a high standard.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • There were many opportunities to learn more throughout the internship program. Many sessions taught about both soft skills and hard skills needed on the job. The experience was very educational and doing hands on work really helped in understanding how the industry works but also what is expected in a potential grad who might be joining in the next year. The hands on work and tasks that were given gave a good taste of the rile and helped in deciding exactly what I will be doing next year as a grad.
