The Role
Very enjoyable! Despite the internship being virtual, the Early Careers Team provided many different experiences including guest speakers and virtual events. The team I was placed in made their best effort to ensure I was always occupied, and whenever I had free time, there were a variety of training courses available for all kinds skills; both technical and interpersonal.
Although I was working remotely, my colleagues were always able to spare time to give me advice/help. I feel like a longer internship would have allowed me to develop my skills to provide more value to the team, however I never felt under-valued in any way.
My supervisor was committed to meeting with me on a weekly basis, and more regularly towards the end of the internship. This helped to ensure that I was on track with my learning and development. More regular meetings would not have been particularly necessary.
Many valuable events and sessions were provided by the careers team, which meant that my diary was always quite full. Sometimes, this made it difficult to schedule meetings with team members. The amount of work within the team varied, however plenty of learning resources were always provided for less busy times.
Much of the experience was self-managed and independent, so there was a large element of responsibility in the sense that I was expected to organise my time and manage my own tasks.
Since I have not yet started my final year of university, I cannot comment with any accuracy, however the internship did provide valuable industry knowledge and context that I will take forward.
The Company
N/A - home-working on virtual internship.
The events were well organized, however the work tasks could have been better planned. I think this is difficult as the 'real' work available is not easily predictable.
They held many events with senior speakers as well as external training for interpersonal skills. Access to a training platform for technical skill was also available (I used this a lot).
Flexi Time
Working from home
Very appealing; they have a very forward-thinking culture and are always open to change and new ideas. Their graduate programme looks strong, so I think a future at Barclays would be exciting.
The Culture
Some interns joined company network events, however this was limited due to the virtual nature of the internship.
