The Role
The internship was delivered online due to Covid-19. However, I did not feel disadvantaged as my colleagues were incredibly helpful and open to networking. As is the case with many large corporations, the technology was sometimes faulty but the IT support was quick to help.
The people are the most valuable asset of the organisation. I have worked in a number of companies but I have never met such supportive, open-minded and happy colleagues.
I felt really supported and valued by my line manager who was always there if I needed any advice, personal or professional. The management is very keen to assist those willing to learn more and improve.
As the internship was delivered through online channels, most of the day was taken up by calls and virtual project meetings. Despite the fact it was August and some of the colleagues were on holiday, interns were quite busy working on their internship project, participating in the Speaker Series and networking with the broader Business.
The organisation provides every opportunity for interns to take the lead on their own development with more senior colleagues always there to assist if needed. Overall, it is a great balance of development guidelines provided by the Business and your own initiative.
Barclays offers a huge amount of training resources to develop skills ranging from Networking tips to Advanced Excel. These and the experience gained through working on the internship project will definitely be beneficial in my future career.
The Company
Supportive and cheerful - not too usual in organisations of this size.
Apart from some interns being unable to access their tech for a couple of days, the internship was planned to the finest detail.
Barclays invests a lot in all of their interns. It is the case as interns are seen as the future of the company.
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Barclays is a massive organisation that covers a full range of activities and business areas. I would definitely love to see myself as part of the organisation in the future.
The Culture
Interns are encouraged to network and work alongside each other as much as possible. This generates some great team spirit and creates new friendships.
Living in London can sometimes prove quite costly. However, if one learns how to budget, everything is possible.
As the office is located in London, the nightlife is simply amazing.
Barclays offers a range of activities, clubs and organisations outside of work for every taste and need, from diversity and inclusion to yoga classes.
