The Role
Extremely engaging and enriching experience. I learned so much in a very short period of time even though it was fully virtual. The team was very friendly and always willing to help which is something that made the internship a lot better. The internship included a technical aspect, a non-technical/business aspect and an environmental/social aspect which gave us a very good idea of what working Bank of America would be like. Overall a really good experience, especially for someone who has not done an internship before.
I felt very valued. Upon delivering my final presentation, all team members made an effort to attend and some even asked for permission to use my slides for other presentations after I leave. I felt that my work was valued and colleagues took time to give me constructive feedback. I had a mid review and a final review where my manager told me things that she liked and things I can improve on, this made me feel valued as she is very busy but still took time to speak with me regularly.
All the time! I had a daily catch up call with my manager (30 minutes every morning) where I updated her on my day and asked her any questions I had or help I needed. I emailed multiple leaders in the firm (directors/MDs) to ask if they have some time for a virtual coffee chat and they were always so quick to respond and happy to speak. They never made me feel like I was a burden or that my questions were not valuable, it was quite the opposite.
It really varied. The weeks after being assigned projects were very busy, I often had to work really hard to try and finish my tasks. Other days (before projects were given), I sometimes had a few hours of free time which I tried to use to do online courses offered by The Bank. Overall, I was never bored but i wish the projects were spread out more over the course of the internship because the overlaps created a lot of stress.
They gave us as much as possible given the virtual setting. We were not allowed to access bank systems or work on live software (e.g. trading platforms) because of confidentiality. This created a limitation with what we can actually do. We were therefore either assigned research-type projects or greenfield projects in order to make the internship meaningful and ensure no confidentiality issues arise. I had to speak to a lot of team members for my projects as well as present to around 20 people for 1 project and 65 for the other one.
The technical skills will definitely be helpful as I gained a better understanding of programming as part of a large team. The training will help me beyond my degree as I now have an understanding of working in a large corporate and the risk and compliance regulations related to that. The business skills and knowledge of financial markets concepts will be useful if I work in the industry after graduation. It is also useful for general knowledge and understanding.
The Company
I wasnt in the office so its hard to tell. However, my actual experience working with people in the company and in my team was really positive. My team all get along really well and are very friendly towards everyone. However, they do not have many social events or do a lot of activities after work (virtually like quizzes or social zoom calls, etc.). I think if this was in the office, they would have a lot more after-work drinks, etc.
very organised!! HR really did an exceptional job! We had sessions with US interns as well as just EMEA. We heard from the CEO and all the leaders in the firm. We also had specific training sessions for all different aspects of our internship (technical/programming, business, etc.). We were given a weekly schedule and sent links for the different sessions. The only issues were that the schedule was only sent on Friday or the following week and there were issues with links often.
They really invested! They hired a lot of external trainers and companies to train us in soft skills and technical skills. The sessions varied from 3 hours to several days. We had tasks to do and were given a lot of tool kits and resources after the sessions to keep. We had so many online courses available to us, whether through the internal training portal or 3rd party vendors that the Bank has paid for.

Very! They give offers at the end of the internship scheme and the conversion rate for interns is quite high. Within the company, it seems that the development and progression is quite good and it is mapped out clearly. In the final review, they informed each intern whether they want them to come back the following year or not. For people who did not intern, there are applications for grad roles on the website that they can apply through directly.
The Culture
Given the fact that it was virtual, the social scene was decent. I had a few zoom calls with other interns to get to know each other. We also had calls to celebrate the end of projects. During the calls, we talked about the experience and did a few quizzes and online games. The bank didnt really organise anything for interns to get to know each other - that wouldve been nice. It was all intern driven.
We had a few sessions organised by the bank to see virtual exhibitions and had a workshop on self-portraits. These were so fun and really engaging and interesting! We didnt have a lot more opportunities. There was 1 volunteering sessions where we gave young school students feedback on their speeches. This lasted a few hours and and only happened once during the internship. It would have been nice if we had more volunteering opportunities, I think that is the case in in-office internships.
