The Role
I enjoyed it very much, everyone I worked with was lovely and incredibly helpful. There was also a mixture of tasks during the internship, keeping it enjoyable. There was a mixture of virtual speaker sessions which provided more insight into being an actuary. When I was given client work it was made easy by everyone answering all my questions.
I felt very valued by my colleagues, they were probably my favorite part of the internship. When there was client work for me to do, it was passed to me which made me feel valued.
I was given an incredible amount of support by management. When I had questions regarding some presentations I had to give, one of my managers gave me so much advice and also lots of information. He was also happy to check my presentations before I gave them, and after I'd given them he gave me lots of positive feedback. My other managers also kept in regular contact with me which was very nice.
I did feel I was quite busy, especially with a lot of little daily tasks that needed doing. I was given a good amount of client work, which took me a while as I was new. Alongside that I had three presentations to work on which also kept me quite busy as I wanted them to be high quality.
I was given responsibility when working on client work but I also knew if I needed help that it would be given so it was the perfect balance I felt.
In my degree I would say the skills that will help me are definitely time management and prioritising tasks. In the future, I hope to get offered a grad role by WTW and so all of the skills I've gained around actuarial work will serve me well. For example I completed an actuarial fundamentals booklet which was then marked. This was my first taste of actuarial work and concepts and I will remember these in the future.
The Company
This is hard to say as it was a virtual internship due to Covid-19. However, me and the other interns planned a social for everyone which was really fun. There was also another social during my time there which again was nice to get to know more people and I had a good time. Also everyone I worked with was very friendly which stopped things becoming dull.
It was very well organised especially considering that it was virtual for the first time ever. We had plenty of technical training and also virtual speaker sessions to fill up time. As mentioned there was also a few presentations to give and client work. There was a few IT issues but I think this was to be expected.
WTW invested a lot into me, it felt like they really wanted me to grow and succeed. There was technical training on specifically pensions calculations to help me gain more knowledge. We also had weekly technical recap sessions which were very useful.
Working from home
I would very much like to be offered a grad role by WTW. I thoroughly enjoyed everyone that I spoke to and worked with, it was a very supportive atmosphere, with lots of praise and also trust in me. I liked client work I got involved with and also actuarial work fit right in with my love of applied mathematics.
The Culture
Absolutely! Me and the other interns planned a social together and also wrote a newsletter for the office so it was a good way to get to know them even virtually! We were also given buddies who were grads and I felt a built a bond with them, they would always call me if I needed help.
I can't comment on this as it was virtual.
Again can't comment as it was virtual.
It's hard to comment as it was virtual. But there was a few socials which were fun.
