The Role
Due to Covid-19, my internship was performed online. I am so grateful that it was not cancelled because I really enjoyed the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the company and meet people inside the organisation. I particularly liked being assigned a buddy who I could talk to privately and ask all my questions.
Everyone on the programme was really welcoming and friendly. We were given a case study to do within a group of 4 other interns and this gave us the opportunity to get to know each other and it really brought the online internship to life. The staff were also all professional and encouraging. Overall, I was very impressed with the people I met through the EY internship and I hope to stay in touch with them going forwards.
People were online the whole time to support people struggling with the technology or who had questions. The only potential improvement could be that when people are having technical issues with Microsoft teams, the supervisors did not always know how to fix the problems. However, this is a very new way of working so it is understandable to have some problems.
Due to the internship being online, a lot of the usual activities we would normally perform were not possible. This resulted in us having more spare time than usual. Something that could have been improved would have been to give us more opportunities to talk and network with our fellow interns - like we would have in face to face internships. This could have been achieved by mixing us up on different smaller groups at either the beginning or end of the day.
We were not given any responsibility but I think this is hard to achieve on an online one-week internship.
We received lots of useful seminars, from presentation skills to time management and prioritisation. This may be useful in my degree going forward if I need to present to my peers or particularly if I am feeling overwhelmed with my workload, especially during the exam period. This may also help me in my initial career as I build on these skills, whether working for EY or any other employer. It is also interesting to note the emphasis that EY placed on mindfulness, something to consider going forward.
